Applications are invited from experienced and enthusiastic individuals for this Locum Appointment for Service post to support the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department in Forth Valley. We are seeking a highly motivated doctor to join our established medical team. The role will involve contributing to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology In patient and Out patient services.

This post is available from 8th January 2018 for six months and is based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert, FK5 4WR, and provides an excellent opportunity obtain experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, working in a modern, purpose built state of the art NHS hospital.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to a regular out of hours rota. This post is offered on a part time basis but applications from candidates seeking flexible working will be considered.

NHS Forth Valley is the largest employer in the area, with approximately 8000 staff from a wide range of professional and support occupations. Currently, services are provided in one acute hospital, four community hospitals and fifty-six health centres. Acute Services are based in purpose built 860 bedded Forth Valley Royal Hospital, which opened in 2011 and provides inpatient and outpatient services for a population of approximately 310,000. 5 FURTHER DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION URTHER DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION The Obstetrics/Gynaecology Department

All inpatient services are in Forth Valley Royal Hospital but some outpatient clinics are also located in Stirling Community Hospital. There are around 3,400 deliveries annually, with NICU adjacent to the labour ward. Theatres and Adult ITU are also close to the labour & gynaecology wards. Separate dedicated areas for Obstetrics triage, Ultrasound, Obstetric Day Care and Early Pregnancy services are located close to the Outpatient clinic area within the Women & Children’s Unit. The maternity unit is staffed by a combination of core staff and team midwives who work in both community and hospital areas for their own patient group. The very large majority of patients deliver in the hospital setting. The gynaecology service has access to both inpatient beds and 23 hour stay within the theatre area.

Establishment

The department is part of the Women, Children, Sexual Health CAMHS and Psychological Therapies Service and the managerial structure is as follows:

There are 17 Consultants in the Department and an Associate Specialist also forms part of the clinical team.

The Forth Valley Royal Hospital is fully digital, and the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department is well equipped.

6 JOB DESCRIPTION

Background to the Post

The department has two tiers of junior staff working full-shift rotas. The maternity unit is staffed by midwives who work in teams of 10-12 members, and each team covers both community and hospital areas for their own patient group. Additional core staff, provide help in labour and maternity ward areas. The very large majority of patients deliver in the hospital setting. Roles and Responsibilities

 As agreed with the General Manager/Head of Midwifery, Associate Medical Director (Women & Children), and along with other colleagues, provide an area wide service in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness, and for the proper functioning of the service.

 Undertake out–of-hours responsibilities for Forth Valley Royal Hospital with a frequency of 1 in 7 to support the middle grade tier of the rota.

 Junior medical staff are expected to cover inpatient areas including Labour Ward & to assess and treat patients attending as emergencies to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Service. Middle grade doctors on Obstetrics and Gynaecology should have experience of working within the Labour ward and dealing with gynaecological emergencies with indirect Consultant supervision out of hours.

 Attend antenatal, gynaecology & special interest clinics

 The successful applicant will be expected within his/her NHS responsibilities, to undertake audit, and to partake in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as required. The appointee will be expected to share in teaching programmes for medical students, junior and middle-grade medical staff in Forth Valley. There is a well developed programme of weekly Departmental educational meetings, monthly hospital wide Clinical Forums. The successful applicant will be expected to take an active part in the teaching of medical students who are attached to Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

 Motivate staff within the service, through leading by example, and fostering good working relationships at all levels in line with the principles of the local partnership agreements.

 Contribute to developments and initiatives within Acute Services as appropriate and as requested.

 Undertake teaching, and contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity across the area service.

 Ensure the efficient and effective use of the Board’s resources.

 Support the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Departments Clinical Governance agenda.

 Operate within the scope of agreed policies in WCSU.

7 Teaching, Research and Audit

NHS Forth Valley places a high priority on training and development across all staff groups and strongly supports continuing medical education programme. The postgraduate centre is located within the main hospital building and is well-equipped. The library contains:

 Medline on CD-ROM for literature searching

 Internet access

 portable colour laptop PC for use with overhead projection Forth Valley Royal Hospital has also developed a comprehensive clinical skills teaching suite for the teaching of resuscitation techniques and other procedural skills. The Scottish anaesthetic training simulator is within the hospital. There are weekly postgraduate meetings involving all specialties. There are regular postgraduate medical meetings in the hospital for both hospital and primary care medical staff. Glasgow and Edinburgh with their Royal Colleges, University medical schools and postgraduate facilities are within easy reach.

CRITERIA FOR THE POST

 Full General Medical Council Registration, with a licence to practise

 Part 1 MRCOG

 Appropriate practical skills and experience with intrapartum care and operative and instrumental deliveries.

 Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

 Ability to work well within a team

 Demonstrable organisational and time management skills

 A genuine interest in the specialty

8 CONTRACTUAL DETAILS

This appointment will be subject to the new terms and conditions of service for Doctors in Training as amended from time to time.

This Locum Appointment for Service at ST3+ level post is offered on a full-time fixed term basis from January 2018.

Formal appointment to this post will be conditional upon satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks, including satisfactory medical screening.

NHS Forth Valley does not negotiate salary placements. On commencement of employment, salary will be determined in accordance NHS Circular PCS (DD) 2017/1

This appointment will be superannuable under the NHS Superannuation Scheme, which is contracted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS). New employees will automatically be enrolled in the scheme unless they opt out. The employment is subject to one calendar months notice on either side.

The post holder will be professionally responsible to the Associate Medical Director and managerially responsible to the General Manager, Women & Children Directorate.

Pre-Employment Screening

Criminal Convictions - Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme has replaced the previous disclosure arrangements for people who work with vulnerable groups. The duties of this post require the post holder to undertake regulated work with children and young people (individuals aged under 18 years) and / or protected adults (individuals aged 16 or over who is provided with (and thus receives) a type of care, support or welfare service).

The post holder will be required to be a member of the PVG Scheme and to consent to NHS Forth Valley obtaining a Scheme Record or Scheme Record Update, as appropriate. Any failure to disclose convictions could result in the withdrawal of an offer of employment.

10 Occupational Health Screening

This post may involve the performance of exposure prone procedures and therefore the successful applicant will be required to produce evidence of their Hepatitis B and C Immunity Status prior to appointment and to undergo satisfactory health screening.
