FIRST GRADE NEWS April 24, 2015

LANGUAGE ARTS Next week we will explore the question “What can you learn from someone who is from another country?” We’ll learn what happens when a new neighbor moves in by reading the realistic fiction story The New Friend. Then we will look at some of America’s monuments and symbols in the informational text Symbols of Our Country. Sight Words: buy, city, family, myself, party, please, school, seven Phonics Skills: Vowel combinations ou, ow, oi, oy, au, aw Vocabulary Strategy: Synonyms-introduction to a thesaurus Comprehension Skill: Understanding characters-tell more about characters Comprehension Strategy: Summarize-stop to tell important events as you read Writing Focus: Narrative writing-story Spelling Words: how, now, cow, owl, ouch, house, found, out, gown, town

SOCIAL STUDIES Students will know the differences among buyers, sellers and producers and between goods and services. They will recognize that money can be used in the exchange of goods and services.

Words to Know capital resources: things that people need to produce goods and services consumers: people who pay for goods or services producers: people who make goods or provide services for consumers service: work or a duty someone does for another person goods: things made for people to buy MATH Students were given the final chapter 10 assessment over measurement and data. Those tests were graded and sent home this week. If your child did not do well on the test the first time, I gave him/her a second test. This week in math we started learning about geometry. The standards which we will cover in this chapter are: **Math Chapter 11 Reason with shapes and their attributes. 1.G.1: Distinguish between defining attributes versus non-defining attributes; build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

1.G.1 Compose two-dimensional shapes or three-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

1.G.3. Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the word halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more =equal shares creates smaller shares.

Vocabulary: cone, cube, cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism, flat surfaces and curved surfaces.

SCIENCE Next week in science we will discuss and review these topics: Water, Informational Technology, Engineering Design and Healthy Habits.
