USING RETIN A TO AID IN FACIAL REJUVENATION

FACTS: Retin A and Renova creams have been demonstrated to reduce wrinkles (rhytids), sun damaged skin (actinic keratosis), and pigmentation (pigmentary actinic change) of skin when used for greater than six (6) months. The greatest decrease in wrinkling occurs in patients who use the higher concentrations the most frequently (under physician supervision) with a gradual progressive program. The limiting factors of Retin A usage are the skin reactions of peeling (xerosis) and redness (erythema) which occurs in 70- 90% of patients. The reactions gradually resolve in 2-12 weeks and the application frequency and concentration must be varied on an individual basis.

1. Apply to entire face including eyelids. Avoid contact with eyes. If this should occur, flush eyes with tap water and call my office for further instructions. 2. Peeling is desirable. It keeps the epidermis, or top layer of skin, in a constant state of renewal. If peeling is excessive, stop Retin A for ten (10) days to allow the skin to recover and then reinitiate the product. (The peeling response should be less.) 3. A thin coat of Retin A should be applied nightly during the first month. The concentration and/or frequency will be varied according to physician’s direction. 4. Rub Retin A into fine lines and eyelids. Stinging and tearing may occur, but usually disappears in 30 minutes or less. 5. Temporary worsening of wrinkles might occur, but will disappear as the skin is renewed and with moisturizers. 6. Remove the peeling skin with gentle wash and follow with prescribed moisturizer.

7. If initial irritation is too severe, discontinue for one or two days and start again using Retin A every other day until irritation does not occur. Then continue daily. 8. Use a daily sunscreen moisturizer when using the Retin A program as Retin A sensitizes the skin to sunlight exposure. 9. Should always be discontinued weeks prior to waxing, laser hair removal, intense pulsed light therapy, chemical or CO2 laser peels, Matrix or Portrait. Please inquire with staff about specifics. Please Note: Retin A can cause facial telangiectasias (broken capillaries) of the facial skin with prolonged use in certain skin types.
