Selfie Photo/Writing Assignment

“ Selfie” Photo/Writing Assignment

Our first assignment for the year! Aren’t you excited? I know I am! This particular assignment will ask you to be creative and use the writing skills you learned in seventh grade.

Step 1: You will be asked to choose three items which you feel best represent you today, as well as your goals and dreams for the future.

 Please do not choose items that you “like” on a superficial level. For example, I really enjoy the chicken sandwich from Il Tramezzino, however it does not represent who I am. I also really like Mumford and Sons, but they don’t represent me in any way.

 I do however, love my copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. I received this book on my 19th birthday, and the circumstances under which I received it inspired my love of theatre and Shakespeare’s works, which today influence what I do with my career. Also, I love the world of academia in a profound way. The world of books, libraries, universities is one I’m very fond of, and that pushes me towards my goal of a more advanced degree.

 On Tuesday and Wednesday I will take a Polaroid of you with your items. The Polaroid will then be attached to your essay.

Step 2: You will compose a five paragraph essay telling your audience about your “selfie.”

 The introduction will provide a brief description of who you are today and who you see yourself becoming in the future. This will include important factors that have shaped you, as well as your goals, ambitions, and dreams.

 The body paragraphs will focus on providing details about each item’s importance. By reading your paragraphs, the reader should gain a solid understanding of why that item was chosen and how it ties into the theme of the essay.

 This will be followed by, of course, a summarizing conclusion which ends with a note about the future.
