    Ohio State Defeats Purdue 68-52 For Second Straight Win The Ohio State men’s basketball team defeated Purdue 68-52 at Value City Arena for its second straight win and fifth in six contests on Feb. 15. “Just compete, to be honest,” sophomore guard Luther Muhammad said of head coach Chris Holtmann’s message. “We knew it was going to be a fight from start to finish. We had to come out and play hard, play together. And our coach was just hitting on competing, executing and toughness.” The Buckeyes used a balanced attack to take down the Boilermakers, led by junior forwards Kyle Young and Kaleb Wesson. Young led the team with a career-high 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds, and Kaleb Wesson recorded 13 points with eight boards, four assists and four steals. “More than anything he impacts the game in ways that are not always on the stat sheet, but today it really was on the stat sheet with his rebounds and his scoring,” Holtmann said of Young. “His activity and his ability to guard different bodies in different positions – he was really good.” After leading 29-20 at halftime, Ohio State opened the second half on a 7-0 run with a three-pointer by Muhammad sandwiched between layups from Young and Kaleb Wesson. Purdue used an 8-3 spurt sparked by a three-pointer and and-1 from senior forward Evan Boudreaux to cut Ohio State’s lead to 39-28 with 15:11 to play. Eleven points was the closest Purdue would get until the Boilermakers ripped off a 6-0 run to cut a 45-30 Buckeye lead to nine points with 10:17 remaining.

Sophomore guard Luther Muhammad led Ohio State (18-9, 8-8) to victory over Maryland (22-5, 12-4) with 22 points, hitting 4 of 8 three-pointers and all eight of his foul shots. Muhammad also held Maryland standout guard Anthony Cowan to 10 points on 1-of-4 shooting, which led him to be asked which part of his performance he was most proud of. “I don’t really pay too much attention to that,” Muhammad said. “I’m happy we won. I’m happy we all played hard, we all stayed together. They made a lot of runs, they dug themselves back into the game, and we just stayed together, played as one and continued to work hard on defense.” Junior big man Kaleb Wesson gave the Buckeyes a great two-way effort, keeping Maryland standout forward Jalen Smith in check and adding 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior wing Andre Wesson played all 40 minutes for Ohio State and scored 12 points. ‘Our players really competed and really played well,” Holtmann said. “Players win games – they did a great job today. Our older guys led the way. ” The Buckeyes led by 11 points with 11:09 left, but the Terrapins battled back with a 10-2 run to cut the Ohio State lead to 58-55 with 5:52 to play.

    2018-19 MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA INFORMATION 2017-18 YEAR IN REVIEW Chris Holtmann began his tenure at Ohio State with a 25-9 overall record and a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular-season standings at 15-3. The Buck- eyes advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 28th time in program history, making it to the second round of the West Regional in Boise, Idaho. Ohio State fell to Gonzaga after downing South Dakota State. During the regular season, the Buckeyes defeated No. 1 Michigan State in Columbus and took to the road to take down No. 3 Purdue. Holtmann was named the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year while redshirt junior Keita Bates-Diop took home league player of the year honors. Bates-Diop, who was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, averaged a Big Ten best 19.8 points a game while con- tributing nearly nine rebounds a contest. Bates-Diop earned 2018 Consensus Second Team All-America honors to go with his first team All-Big Ten accolades.
