MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR MAY 2008 TVAR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Newsletter Survey Results By Cindy Ferrin Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) Volunteer Newsletter—Volume 39, May 2008 P. O. Box 11143, Pleasanton, CA 94588 www.tvar.org 925-803-7043 Tax ID 94-3156937 1 Paw Prints —The Volunteer Voice

Thanks to all who participated in the recent Paw Prints volunteer newsletter survey. Congratulations to volunteer Debbie Stanley who is the winner of the $25 pet food gift card drawing for returning the survey. Here is a summary of the survey results: Best Liked: Heartwarming animal stories, volunteer recognition, number of animals adopted, calendar of events, list of contacts, event successes, financial information, snippets from other publications, animal quotes, volunteer photos. Least Liked: Calendar of events, and the same contact information included each issue and too many pages. Other Comments: 1. Would like to see tips, facts, and instructions for volunteers. 2. Include answers to the shelter’s frequently asked questions. 3. Summary of TVAR’s Financial Report–year-to-date income/expenses and percentage of the budget spent. 4. Poems or articles from teen volunteers. 5. Animal-related book recommendations. 6. Information about new pet shops, vets, dog parks in the area. 7. Have coordinators write monthly about their experiences to encourage more people to help. 8. Include a few notes from the board of director meetings. 9. Place more emphasis on getting more fosters. 10. Have program leads write what they are doing with their program. 11. Tips for getting cats/dogs adopted. 12. More educational articles—suggested topics include: when to allow a child to adopt a pet, common problems for new pet owners, controlling fleas, ways to prevent kitten/puppy eating garden plants, how to curb bad behavior, how to prevent scratching furniture or chewing items, training tips, tips for new fosters. 13. Recognition of most volunteer hours logged. 14. Calendar takes up too much room–need to reduce the amount of space it takes. 15. Instructions for navigating tvar.org website and where to find volunteer forms on the website. 16. More animal stories and volunteer recognition. 17. Share training experiences, even those with from other shelters. 18. Publish every other month since it is so time-consuming to create. 19. More volunteer photos (it is great to be able to put a name with a face). 20. Feature a teen volunteer each month or a family who is volunteering together (previous teen-volunteer Kevin Metz has agreed to write an article monthly—thanks, Kevin). 21. Spell out acronyms (e.g., DLH = domestic long hair). 22. Shrink size of the information on listing program coordinators. 23. Updated the Wish List. 24. Move repetitive information to the back of the newsletter.

Path Forward: You will see suggestions 19-24 included in this newsletter edition and I will incorporate other survey ideas in future newsletters. The every time information (calendar, contacts, ongoing fundraisers, etc.) have been moved to the end of the newsletter to be available for reference and for new volunteers. New articles and information will be included in the first pages of the newsletter. Since volunteers love to read about adoptions and other foster stories and volunteer recognition, this is where your help is needed. If you have a heartwarming story or other item for the newsletter, please e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 925-828-8664 with information (e.g., if you would like to include a story in the next newsletter about Fido or Fluffy, please leave your e-mail and phone information). I will then be in contact with you for more information.

When I contacted Karen she responded quickly and in detail Thanks to the following contributors to this regarding Giselle. She was very informative and I could immediately edition: sense her passion and love for helping animals! I scheduled a time to Elisa Bettencourt meet Karen and Giselle at her home, and Karen was very Shannon Chase accommodating and welcoming. After meeting Giselle, I decided to bring her home for a 2-week trial period. Karen answered all of my Terri Duncan questions and concerns and provided me with everything needed to Cindy Ferrin make sure Giselle was comfortable and well taken care of while she Linda Galisatus was with me. I had Giselle for a total of 6 days, and Karen would Lisa Healy check in every day with me and invited me to call/contact her at any Carole Leschinsky point during that time to make sure all was going well. It didn't end Margaret MacLean up working out with Giselle but Karen was still amazingly supportive and assured me not to feel bad and that Giselle was more Diana Mittelberger than welcome back in her home and would be taken care of. Karen Susan Ruxton really helped me feel comfortable with my decision. Kathi Samec Seeing Karen's passion for animals has made me want to start Lisa Williams volunteering with TVAR. TVAR is very lucky to have her as a Wish List volunteer!
