2003 CLOVER HILL !! $38.95 REGION: NORTHERN TASMANIA, TASMANIA Clover Hill is located in the Pipers River region of north east Tasmania – widely acknowledged as a premier location for producing world class cool climate sparkling wines. As a dedicated sparkling estate, Clover Hill was also recently awarded 2005 Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year. Clover Hill sparkling wine is made from the three classic sparkling wine varietals – chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. With a minimum of three years on yeast lees and inclusion of selected reserve wines aged in French oak foudres; traditionelle methodé champenoise techniques are used to create a sparkling wine of exemplary freshness and complexity. The 2003 is made up of 55% chardonnay, 39% pinot noir and 6% pinot meunier. Selected in James Halliday's Top 100 Wines of 2008 : "The wine is based on a blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier (in that order), partially aged in oak before being bottle-fermented, spending three years on lees. Glints of gold run through the straw colour and introduce a palate with a rippling of stonefruit, ripe apple, red berry and spice flavours, augmented by a touch of brioche, followed by a long, well-balanced finish." James Halliday - 96 points "A fully worked style of sparkling, there is no question that it is not Champagne - the mid palate richness and underlying fruit characters give this away. Instead this is a lovely 'full' flavoured sparkling, with a poised, faintly bready, chunky, leesy nose backed by & a fullness & intensity to the rich & balanced, powerfully flavoured palate that brings you back for glass after glass. Top stuff." Andrew Graham – 18.8 out of 20 points "What a wine, one of power and finesse, complexity and purity . The impact of the red fruit is immediately apparent with a bouquet of strawberry tart and bush honey and a rich, round texture. Brilliant stuff!" Peter Bourne "Here's yet more evidence supporting the idea that Tasmania is Australia's top sparkling wine region . It has a deep colour and a creamy fine bubble. The bouquet is reminiscent of brioche and macaroons, while the palate evolves more character with every sip. Bigger and firmer than previous Clover Hills, it's serious Tassie fizz." Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure Uncorked "Seriously good and a two–time winner of Winestate Australian Sparkling Wine of the Year. From Tassie's Pipers River region it's elegant, complex and classy with a persistent bead, citrus flavours and a crisp finish. Drink with seafood." Kerry Skinner; Illawarra Mercury "Tasmanian growers boast furthermore of the fact that their average yields are less than half those Champagne, resulting in more concentrated, complex juice. Clover Hill fizz is made from Tasmanian fruit Grape ripening in Pipers River is slowed by winds off the Bass Strait, making it a good area for sparkling wine ingredients and such cool climate varieties as Riesling and Pinot Noir, both of which bewitching varieties thrive in Tasmania." Jancis Robinson, UK’s Financial Times "Colour: Attractive Champagne hue of pale straw. A persistent fine, vibrant bead and gentle foaming mousse. Nose: Complex layers of stone fruits, yeast age characters hints of almond biscuit and toasty coconut characters derived from the aged reserve wine. Palate: Elegant, yet with superb length and breadth of flavours. Citrus characters integrate beautifully with the bread dough from the wines time on tirage. The finish is long and delightful."
