Matthew G. Van Vranken President, Spectrum Health Hospitals – Grand Rapids

Matthew G. Van Vranken is the president of Spectrum Health Hospitals – Grand Rapids, a position he assumed in May 2003. Van Vranken came to Spectrum Health with more than 20 years of industry experience, including executive positions at two Ivy League- affiliated hospitals. As president of Spectrum Health Hospitals – Grand Rapids, Van Vranken is responsible for operations of the system’s Grand Rapids-area hospitals, including Butterworth, Blodgett, DeVos Children’s Hospital, Kent Community Hospital and Spectrum Health Continuing Care.

Before coming to Spectrum Health, Van Vranken served for six years as executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, a medical center affiliated with Harvard University. In that capacity, Van Vranken was responsible for operations in the 875-bed facility that has been listed annually in both the HCIA Mercer Top 100 and the US News & World Report Honor Roll since 1994.

Van Vranken earned a bachelor’s degree in health services administration from Ithaca College in Ithaca N.Y., and a master’s of health services administration from George Washington University in Washington D.C.
