Kinetic Energy- Energy that an object has when it is in motion Examples: a moving car, a person jogging Synonyms: mechanical energy

Potential Energy- Energy that an object has when it has the potential to move 1) Gravitational Potential energy: a rock teetering on the edge of a cliff 2) Elastic Potential energy: a stretched rubber band

Heat Energy- The movement of molecules within a substance Example: hot tea Synonyms: Thermal energy

Sound energy- Vibration energy that travels in longitudinal waves Example: a dog barking

Electrical energy- Energy that is carried by electrons Examples: Electricity, lightening Light Energy- Energy that travels in electromagnetic waves Synonyms: Radiant energy, solar energy, sunlight,

Electromagnetic spectrum: (radio waves, ultraviolet rays, visible light waves, infrared rays, x-rays, gamma rays)

Chemical energy- Energy stored in the bonds of molecules Examples: food, ATP, gas, wood Energy is released when the bonds are broken (burning wood, digesting food) Synonym: food energy

Nuclear energy- Energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom 1) Fusion- Energy is released when nuclei combine Example: energy produced by the sun when hydrogen nuclei are fused to create helium 2) Fission- Energy is released when nuclei split Example: nuclear power plant splits the nucleus of uranium to release energy

Synonym: Radioactive energy
