Deadwood – a Genre Analysis
Deadwood – a Genre Analysis ”You cocksucker!” – Al Swearengen 1 Abstract The following thesis takes into consideration the topic of genre, more specifically the western genre. My object of study is the HBO series Deadwood (2004-06) created By David Milch. The purpose of this thesis is to show how Deadwood relates to the western genre, and how it diverges from the traditional depiction of the western mythology. For the purpose of the analysis, my theoretical framework will consist of relevant theories within the theoretical field of genre. My theory is derived from the anthology comprised By Barry Keith Grant called Film Genre Reader IV. My theory section deals with the proBlems concerning the definition of genre, more specifically how we categorise genres. For this part my theory starts with a discussion of the problems arising from genre analysis. Hereon follows a discussion of relevant theories and methods within the framework of genre. I include in this section Edward Buscombe’s method on inner and outer form of genre; Rick Altman’s method on Semantic and Syntactic relations; Ideology which is derived from the workings of Rick Altman, RoBin Wood, and BarBara Klinger; a section concerning myth based on Barry Keith Grant’s notions of myth in genres; furthermore I discuss the issue of characters within genre, as it is a suBject important within the analysis of a TV series. My analysis consists of two parts. The first part is a historical overlook of the western genre, in which I take into consideration the various conventions, narratives, semantic traits, the mythic connections, and the ideological perspective of the genre. -
Oliver Sherman
Mongrel Media Presents OLIVER SHERMAN A Film by Ryan Redford (82min., Canada, 2010) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html Logline Tensions arise when a veteran visits the home of the fellow soldier who saved his life back in the war. Short Synopsis Feeling lost and disconnected, with no family of his own, veteran Sherman Oliver sets out to the countryside in search of the soldier who saved him back in the war. That man, Franklin Page, has long since moved on – to a wife, two children, and a reliable job in a quiet, rural town. Upon arriving, Sherman seems at first a harmless, if awkward, shell of a man. But as he inserts himself further into the Pages’ lives, he reveals himself to be an angry, unstable individual prone to great jealousy and deep resentment. The stability Franklin worked so hard to establish is soon threatened, and the violence he believed he’d left behind in the war begins to re-emerge and cloud over both the household and the town itself. Long Synopsis A first feature for award-winning writer/director Ryan Redford, Oliver Sherman assembles an impressive cast including Garret Dillahunt (Winter’s Bone, No Country For Old Men, Deadwood), Molly Parker (Deadwood, The Center of the World, Kissed) and Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve, Blade, Zodiac). -

Reel Gender: Examining the Politics of Trans Images in Film and Media
REEL GENDER: EXAMINING THE POLITICS OF TRANS IMAGES IN FILM AND MEDIA Joelle Ruby Ryan A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2009 Committee: Susana Peña, Advisor Rekha Mirchandani Graduate Faculty Representative Bill Albertini Vikki Krane © 2009 Joelle Ruby Ryan All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Susana Peña, Advisor This dissertation examines transgender images in film, television and media from the 1950s through the present, with an emphasis on images from the 1980s through today. The primary goal of the dissertation is to interrogate the various gender and sexual ideologies contained within the representations to determine the social status of trans people in American society. How do these images function to both encourage and stymie the liberation of transgender people in the United States? The dissertation deploys trans, queer and feminist theories to critically analyze the cultural work performed by these mass-media texts. What are the trends within the trans media canon, and how do they relate to the treatment of real-world gender-nonconforming people? In order to answer these questions, I separate the trans images into four different stereotypes. For each of these stereotypes, I analyze three to four films to compare and contrast the way the films deal with the issues of gender and sexual variation. The first stereotype I examine is the Transgender Deceiver. The Transgender Deceiver utilizes drag and gender transformation to obtain something they want from society. While the films analyzed are comedies (Tootsie, Just One of the Guys, Sorority Boys, and Juwanna Mann), I argue that they are not as innocuous as they appear due to the way they stereotype gender-variant people as duplicitous, selfish and conniving. -
