How to Write a Current Events Paper

Step 1: Find a Science article you want to write about! In this case, it will be from a National Geographic magazine. Your article must be an ACTUAL ARTICLE (not an ad, or letters to the editor, etc. When in doubt, ask the teacher.) The article needs to have at least two full pages of text. Some have many more pages than that—in this case, you are allowed to just read and reflect on the first two pages of the article. A set of pictures doesn’t count as a page, you need to focus on two pages of text

Step 2: Writing the current event paper

 Write the title of your article on the top of the page.

 Write the date of the issue (found on the side) and the page numbers you are focusing on

 Write an Article summary: In one paragraph, summarize the article’s key points in your own words. The paragraph should be at least five sentences long (more is better!). This paragraph only includes what the article was about—it does not include your opinion. The easiest way to write an article summary is to read the article (or portion of the article you are focusing on) and then try to remember what it was about without looking back at it.

 Personal Reflection: In the second paragraph, express your opinion, thoughts, comments, and/or questions about the article you read. Here are some questions you can ask yourself after reading the article to help you with this section:

o “What did I find interesting about this article and why did I choose it?”

o “Do I want to know more about the information?”

o “Did I think the article was sad? Happy? Funny? Serious? Confusing? Did it make me angry? Relieved? Excited? Scared? Why did it make me feel this way?"
