CCA at the

A core element of the , the CCA department seeks to inculcate the values and of Lyceum through , active participation and student empowerment.

The students are at the center of the activities and fully responsible for leading all student initiatives and students under the guidance of expert professionals in the fields.

The CCA societies are divided under the following heads:

SERVICE & ADVOCACY

Critical service learning and community building are core values of the Lyceum. Under the umbrella of Social Justice, societies aim to create awareness about sociopolitical issues, build communities and service underserved segments of our .

Student Societies

1. Religions for Peace – to promote peace and inclusivity through understanding the core essence of all religions whilst standing firm in one’s own faith.

2. Lypaws – to advocate the humane treatment of animals, protection of habitats, and the placement of abandoned pets in caring homes.

Education Outreach Service Projects. 1. Mashal – to develop an outreach program allowing students of Lyceum to provide to the children of Neelum Colony.

2. Sirath-ul-Jannah – to volunteer with the goal of connecting and engaging with the children at a home for abandoned and at-risk youth in Karachi every Saturday.

CREATIVITY

The creative societies at Lyceum seek to promote experiential learning and promote active discussions through engagement with creative pursuits.

Student Societies 1. LyTheatre – to enable students to find creative expression through training sessions, activities and performances.

2. LyProv – to develop improvisational skills along with confidence, communication, inter-personal and team building skills through improv.

3. IRIS: Photography Society – to create a platform for amateur photographers to open their eyes to the world of light, colour and tones through interactive discussions, classes and field trips.

6. LySlam: Spoken Word Society – to encourage members to not only write and perform self-written pieces but also to explore newer forms of the art of spoken word, a modern form of poetry.

8. LyArt – to promote art appreciation, participatory workshops and public art projects.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

The Lyceum encourages students to learn by doing and actively participating in learning activities. Learning at the Lyceum is not limited to the confines of the classroom but extends to student societies and activities.

Student Societies 1. Liceo Comité Cientifico: Society – to foster a culture of scientific learning that goes beyond classrooms through fun-filled and exciting adventures for the students.

2. Mathematika: Math Society – to encourage students to participate in mathematical competitions, stimulate interest in and provide a supportive atmosphere where students feel free to think out of the box and take risks.

3. LyTerati: Literary Society: to promote a love of reading through book clubs, dialogues with established and aspiring writers and poets.

4. Lysias: Journalism Society: - to compile, edit and publish a monthly newsletter with articles submitted by students. The students are introduced to concepts of media ethics, layout and design.

5. Oracle – the society publishes a 200 page annual year book. The students contribute high-quality original articles, poems, art work, photographs and coverage of events and activities.

6. LyTech: For Tech Enthusiasts: to enhance their computer skills, hear from professionals in the industry and get hands-on experience working in particular areas of interest.

LEADERSHIP AND INTERNATIONALISM

As part of the Round Square worldwide association of , The Lyceum promotes values of Leadership and Internationalism as part of the school’s core values.

Student Societies

1. Honour Society – to promote interactive learning by providing students an opportunity to volunteer to coach their peers in areas they are having trouble.

2. LyCorp: Business Society: to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills through Business Games allowing students to showcase their skills.

3. Debate Society – to provide a platform to students to hone their debating and skills and to better understand world affairs. The Debate Society holds regular training sessions to prepare students to compete in national and international competitions.

ROUND SQUARE

Round Square started as a group of European schools, led by German educational Kurt Hahn, which shared unique and ambitious goals regarding human development. It has since grown to a family of 120 Global Member Schools around the world. The Lyceum, having been founded on similar principles, was the first and to date only school in Pakistan to be invited to join Round Square in 2011. As a Round Square school, the Lyceum commits to the principles of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. Lyceum students have the opportunity to interact with students from around the globe at conferences, service projects, adventure trips and debates to name a few.

Outward Bound / Lyceum Adventure Club

Inspired by Kurt Hahn’s Ten Principles of Expeditionary Learning, and guided by a love for the environment, and our beautiful country, the school organizes trips to the Great Outdoors, open to all students depending on trip capacity. These excursions foster youth leadership through participation in wilderness outdoor activities and often offer the experience of a lifetime. All adventure/outward bound activities are subject to a stringent risk assessment and are conducted by experienced staff. Students are expected to work as a team, learn about outdoor survival and safety and generally contribute to all aspects of the trip. Students learn to respect their environment and comply with the principle of leaving no trace.
