Project Read Oct. 14-18, 2013 (9:00-10:30)

Monday- Unit 17 Lesson 1 Skill: Final consonant blends: -st, -nt, -mp, -sk, -sp,-nd Students will be introduced that a final consonant blend is a combination of two consonant sounds at the end of a word. Teacher will display the following final consonant blends in the pocket chart: -ang, -ing, -ong, -ung, -ank, -ink, -onk, -unk, -ch. Students will be ask what the dash mean in all of these letter combinations (the symbols go at the end of a word). Students will then be told that they are going to learn in this lesson about ending blends. Teacher will then display six ending blends that the students will be working with during this lesson in the pocket chart (-st, -sk, -sp, -nt, -nd, -mp). Students will be informed there are 13 ending blends but in this lesson we will only be working with six of them. Students will say each blend sound with the teacher. Teacher will then display the word past in the pocket chart and then skywrite the word. Teacher will then display the Student Word Sheet 17-5 under the document camera, and students will read together. The word desk will be displayed in the pocket chart under the –sk. Next, the word crisp will be displayed under the –sp flashcard. Students will read words from the Student Word Sheet 17-9 while being displayed under the document camera. The three ending blends (-st, -sk, -sp), will be displayed and sounded out applying the correct finger blends. Students will be given Student Practice Sheet 17A page 17-13 to read together and take home to practice reading and writing. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline Bonnie Kline stories “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ask Mr. Best”, and “It’s Musk Hog!” and then they will be placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Tuesday- Unit 17 Lesson 1 Continued Skill: Final consonant blends: -st, -nt, -mp, -sk, -sp,-nd Teacher will display the ending blend of –nt with the word went under the blend. Students will sound out the word using finger blending to complete. The Student Word Sheet page 17-19 will be displayed under the document camera, and students will read as a group each word. Students will then be given a copy of the Student Practice Sheet 17B to read as a group and place into their notebooks. The word hand will be displayed in the pocket chart under the –nd ending blend. Student Word Sheet page 17-19 will be displayed under the document camera and the class will read as a group. The students will then be given the following sentence for dictation: Did Frank mend the rip in his tent? Next, the word jump will be displayed under the –mp ending blend. Student Word Sheet page 17-23 will be displayed under the document camera and the class will read each word as a group. Students will then be given Student Practice Sheet 17C, while one will be displayed under document camera to read and then be placed inside their notebooks. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline stories “A Stunt”, “Ed’s Brass Band”, “Song of a Swamp”, along with “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ask Mr. Best”, “It’s Musk Hog!” and then placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Wednesday-Lexia Lab (9:00-9:45) Students will be taken into computer lab and signed into Lexia Reading Core5 computer program. The computer program is an individualized reading curriculum to help students practice and learn foundational reading skills by interacting with the online program, receiving teacher-led Lexia Lessons, and continuing with independent, paper-based practice activities using Lexia Skill Builders. The data will then be captured and reported to the teacher for planning instruction and helping students reach grade-level benchmarks. After returning from the Lexia Lab students will oral read the Bonnie Kline stories “A Stunt”, “Ed’s Brass Band”, “Song of a Swamp”, “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ask Mr. Best”, “It’s Musk Hog!” and then placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Thursday-Unit 17 Lesson 2 Skill: Phonetically irregular words [two] and [do] Teacher will display the new red words two and do in the Red Word Pocket Chart, and ask students what kind of word are these (red words). Students will listen while the teacher reads a sentence that starts with each red word: Two plus two is four. Do you have a pet? Students will then be given a copy of the Student Sentence Sheet page 17-29, and they will draw red boxes around the red words. Students will follow the same instructions for Student Sentence Sheet page 17-31, and 17-33. Students will be given the following sentences for sentence dictation: Which pets are yours? What did you have for a snack? Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline story “Two”, “A Stunt”, “Ed’s Brass Band”, “Song of a Swamp”, “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ask Mr. Best”, “It’s Musk Hog!” and then placed in notebook to read each night for homework.

Friday-Unit 17 Lesson 3 Skill: -ld, -lp, -lk, -lt Students will review that a final consonant blend is a combination of two consonant sounds at the end of a word. Students will be introduced to the next four ending blends that they will be learning. Teacher will display each blend in the pocket chart (-ld, -lp, -lk, -lt). Students will then read the words and sentences from the Student Word Sheet page 17-37, and Student Practice Sheet 17D page 17-39 while shown under the document camera. The word held will be displayed under the ending blend of –ld, and the word milk will be displayed under the blend-lk. Students will use finger blending to sound out each word, and skywrite. Teacher will continue the same process with the ending blends of –lp, and –lt. Students will then oral read the Bonnie Kline stories “Two”, “A Stunt”, “Ed’s Brass Band”, “Song of a Swamp”, “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ask Mr. Best”, “It’s Musk Hog!”. Students will take the reading comprehension quiz for the stories, stories “A Stunt”, “Ed’s Brass Band”, and “Song of a Swamp”.
