CONTEST SCOPE FOR HEALTH KNOWLEDGE BOWL SkillsUSA DISTRICT COMPETITIONS JANUARY 12, 2017 (Make up dates: January 13, 2017 OR January 17, 2017) YORK COUNTY SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY 2179 South Queen Street, York, PA 17402 Contest Chair: Pam Miller, Dental Assisting Instructor

York County School of Technology Contact Information: [email protected] Purpose: This contest promotes excellence in a competitive team situation in which contestants are given the opportunity to test their knowledge in health care related information. Uniform Requirements: . Uniform-Professional dress as per SkillsUSA standards. SkillsUSA official attire is not required; however, students should conform to the following uniform standards:

o Men should wear a white dress shirt; plain black tie with no pattern; black dress pants; black socks and black dress shoes.

o Ladies should wear a white blouse (with appropriate undergarments which are not visible through the blouse); black knee length skirt or black dress pants; black sheer or skin-tone pantyhose or black socks and black dress shoes. . Tattoos-All visible tattoos must be covered with clothing. . Jewelry-Limit of three (3) studded ear piercings per ear (including cartilage and tragus piercings). One ring per hand; no raised stones in rings. One short necklace permitted. All facial piercings should be removed. . Nails should be clean and neatly trimmed, no longer than 1/8 inch in length. Nail polish must not be chipped. Polish limited to clear or pastel colors. No artificial nails, acrylic nails, crackle, sparkle, or gel polish. No nail jewels or stickers. . Hair-Hair must be pulled back away from face. Only natural hair colors are permitted (colors which are naturally present at birth). Mustaches and beards should be well groomed. Equipment and Materials: Supplied by Technical Committee: . Equipment, supplies, and tools provided include related technology to display questions, including a projector, screen or smart board, and computer with internet connection. Supplied by the contestant: . 60 sheets of 8 ½ x 11 in. white blank paper without lines . Pens, pencils, and 4-6 black marking pens . One basic calculator (it is recommended to bring a spare) Contest Scope: Knowledge Performance: A written knowledge test will be administered during the contestant briefing. This test will be completed as a team. The score from this test will not be announced but will be added to the final score. Contents of the written exam will be based upon standards identified by the National Health Care Core Skills Standards Project. Skills Performance: Teams will demonstrate communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving, and time- management skills by determining and presenting the answer to each question presented during the quiz bowl portion of the contest. Contestants may be required to demonstrate their knowledge in the following areas: . Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology . Medical terminology and medical abbreviations . Effective communication skills . Legal and ethical issues . Safety and infection control . Professionalism and related roles and responsibilities . Wellness and disease prevention . Current events related to health, wellness, and disease Contest Guidelines: General- . The contest will be conducted in four quarters, each with a series of questions from the knowledge areas listed above. There will be a break at the end of the second quarter. . At no time will contestants be permitted to talk with an advisor or spectator during the contest. . Contestants must discard all paper before leaving the contest area. . No electronic devices are permitted during the contest. Use of electronic devices of any kind will result in disqualification. Scoring- . Each team will begin each quarter with zero points. Points will accumulate during the contest for each correct response. Incorrect responses will result in a deduction of points for each incorrect answer. The winning team is the team with highest number of points, which includes the written test score, less any penalties. . A team may choose whether or not to answer the question. If a team chooses to answer a question, it must be written on a sheet of paper, written legibly and large enough to be seen by the floor judge(s). Any team member may write the answer. . The team has 30 seconds to answer the question. A five second warning will be given before time is up. Teams may discuss the answer among them and are cautioned to whisper to each other so as to avoid being overheard by the other teams. . At the allotted time, a team member will stand to respond to the question as directed by the contest judge(s). No team member may stand before the writer has completed the answer. . Answers will be written and must be spelled correctly. Spelling errors will be counted as incorrect responses. . A team who wishes to challenge a score or answer must address the issue with the floor judge before the next question begins.
