(Latest prevailing edition) 44 UL Underwriters' Laboratories Listing 45 FM Factory Mutual Approval 46 47 SHOP DRAWINGS 48 Schedule from the contractor indicating the ANSI/ASTM specification number of the pipe being proposed along 49 with its type and grade, if known at the time of submittal, and sufficient information to indicate the type and rating 50 of fittings for each service. 51 52 QUALITY ASSURANCE 53 1 DFD Project No. 2 3 21 10 00-1 4 1 Substitution of Materials: Refer to Section GC – General Conditions of the Contract, Equals and Substitutions. 2 Order all copper and steel pipe with each length marked with the name or trademark of the manufacturer and type of 3 pipe; with each shipping unit marked with the purchase order number, metal or alloy designation, temper, size, and 4 name of supplier. 5 6 Any installed material not meeting the specification requirements must be replaced with material that meets these 7 specifications without additional cost to the Owner. 8 9 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING 10 Promptly inspect shipments to insure that the material is undamaged and complies with specifications. 11 12 Cover pipe to prevent corrosion or deterioration while allowing sufficient ventilation to avoid condensation. Do not 13 store materials directly on grade. Protect pipe, tube, and fitting ends so they are not damaged. Where end caps are 14 provided or specified, take precautions so the caps remain in place. Protect fittings, flanges, and unions by storage 15 inside or by durable, waterproof, above ground packaging. 16 17 Offsite storage agreements will not relieve the contractor from using proper storage techniques. 18 19 Storage and protection methods must allow inspection to verify products. 20 21 DESIGN CRITERIA 22 Use only new material, free of defects, rust and scale, and meeting the latest revision of ASTM specifications as 23 listed in this specification. 24 25 Construct all piping systems for the highest pressures and temperatures in the respective system but not less than 26 175 psig. 27 28 Where weld fittings are used, use only long radius elbows having a centerline radius of 1.5 pipe diameters. 29 30 Where mechanical grooved fittings are used, use only ASTM standard radius fittings, short radius grooved fittings 31 are not allowed. 32 33 Where ASTM A53 or A795 type F pipe is specified, grade A type E or S, or grade B type E or S may be substituted 34 at Contractor's option. Where ASTM A135 grade A pipe is specified, grade B pipe may be substituted at 35 Contractor's option. Where the grade or type is not specified, Contractor may choose from those commercially 36 available. 37 38 Where ASTM B88, type L H (drawn) temper copper tubing is specified, ASTM B88, type K H (drawn) temper 39 copper tubing may be substituted at Contractor's option. 40 41 WELDER QUALIFICATIONS 42 Welding procedures, welders, and welding operators for all building service piping to be in accordance with 43 certified welding procedures of the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau and Section 927.5 of ASME B31.9 44 Building Services Piping or AWS 10.9 Qualification of Welding Procedures and Welders for Piping and Tubing. 45 Before any metallic welding is performed, Contractor to submit his Standard Welding Procedure Specification 46 together with the Procedure Qualification Record as required by Section 927.6 of ASME B31.9 Building Services 47 Piping. 48 Welder certifications are required to be renewed every three years. If qualification papers are needed on 49 a project, verify that they are current. 50 51 The Architect or Engineer reserves the right to test the work of any welder employed on the project, at the Owner's 52 expense. If the work of the welder is found to be unsatisfactory, the welder shall be prevented from doing further 53 welding on the project and all defective welds replaced. 1 DFD Project No. 2 3 21 10 00-1 4 1 2 3 P A R T 2 - P R O D U C T S 4 5 FIRE SUPPRESSION PIPING 6 STEEL PIPE: 7 Black steel pipe welded and seamless, Type F, Grade A, ASTM A53; black welded and seamless steel pipe for fire 8 protection use, Type F, ASTM A795; electric resistance welded steel pipe, Grade A, ASTM A135. 9 10 Pipe wall Thickness: 11 Threaded pipe shall have a minimum wall thickness of schedule 40. 12 All other pipe shall have a minimum wall thickness of schedule 10. 13 Piping 2” and under shall be minimum schedule 40 unless stated otherwise herein. 14 15 1 ½” and 2” schedule 10 may be allowed on a case by case basis for areas where the piping is exposed 16 and the sprinkler heads are attached directly to the pipe, similar to a storage warehouse or service 17 garage. This must be confirmed with DFD. 18 19 Fittings: Cast iron threaded fittings, Class 125 or 250, ASTM A126/ANSI B16.4. Malleable and ductile iron 20 threaded fittings, Class 150 or 300, ASTM A197/ANSI B16.3. Standard weight seamless carbon steel weld fittings, 21 ASTM A234 grade, ANSI B16.9. Mechanical grooved fittings with EPDM gaskets, ASTM A536 ductile iron, 22 ASTM A47 malleable iron or ASTM A53 fabricated steel. For wet pipe systems mechanical tee fittings with full 23 iron back equal to Grinnell Figure 730 will be allowed only as needed for connection to existing systems. Outlets for 24 drypipe and preaction systems shall be mechanical tees. Mechanical tees with U-bolt back or other fastening means 25 are not allowed. 26 27 Welding Materials: Comply with Section II, Part C, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for welding materials. 28 29 Finish: Hot dipped zinc coated (galvanized) finish on piping and fittings shall be used in drypipe and pre-action 30 systems, piping exposed to weather and piping exposed to corrosive environments where indicated. Thread or cut 31 groove hot dipped zinc coated pipe ends for fitting connections. Indoor dry standpipe systems supplied by a Fire 32 Dept. connection only may be black steel piping and fittings. 33 34 COPPER PIPE: 35 Type L copper water tube, H (drawn) temper, ASTM B88; with cast copper pressure fittings, ANSI B16.18; 36 wrought copper pressure fittings, lead free (<.2%) solder, ASTM B32; flux, ANSI B16.22; copper phosphorous 37 brazing alloy, AWS A5.8 BCuP. Mechanically formed brazed tee connections may be used in lieu of specified tee 38 fittings for branch takeoffs up to one-half (1/2) the diameter of the main. 39 40 CPVC PIPE: 41 CPVC Sprinkler Pipe, ASTM F 442, SDR 13.5. 42 CPVC Sprinkler Fittings, Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 dimensions for 3/4" through 1-1/4”, Schedule 80 for 1-1/2” 43 through 3”. Products to be UL Listed/FM Approved for a rated working pressure of 175 psi at 150°F for sprinkler 44 service. Spears FlameGuard or Harvel BlazeMaster 45 46 Plastic pipe and fittings will not be allowed for this project. 47 48 Delete either the first paragraph or the second paragraph based on DFD and Agency determination of 49 acceptability of CPVC for the particular project. It should be noted that the section for hangers and 50 supports for plastic pipe may also need to be changed. 51 52 PRESSURE SENSING LINE PIPE:

Use black malleable iron on black steel piping and 11 galvanized malleable iron on galvanized steel piping. Grooved couplings may be used in lieu of unions. 12 13 2" AND SMALLER COPPER: 14 ANSI B16.18 cast bronze union coupling or ANSI B15.24 Class 150 cast bronze flanges. 15 16 2-1/2" AND LARGER: 17 ASTM A181 or A105, Class 150, grade 1 hot forged steel flanges of threaded, welding neck, or slip-on pattern on 18 black steel and threaded only on galvanized steel. ANSI B16.1 or ANSI B16.5, Class 150 cast iron threaded flanges. 19 Use raised face flanges ANSI B16.5 for mating with other raised face flanges or equipment with flat ring or full face 20 gaskets. Use ANSI B16.1 flat face flanges with full face gaskets for mating with other flat face flanges on 21 equipment. 22 23 2-1/2" AND LARGER COPPER: 24 ANSI B16.24, Class 150 cast bronze flanges with raised face. 25 26 MECHANICAL GROOVED PIPE CONNECTIONS 27 Mechanical grooved pipe couplings and fittings, ASTM F1476, as manufactured by Victaulic, Anvil, or Grinnell 28 may be used with steel pipe. Mechanical grooved components and assemblies to be rated for minimum 175 psi 29 working pressure unless noted otherwise. 30 31 All mechanical grooved pipe material including gaskets, couplings, fittings and flange adapters shall be from the 32 same manufacturer. 33 34 Couplings and fittings to be malleable iron, ASTM A47, or ductile iron A536 with painted finish. Fittings used on 35 galvanized steel pipe to have galvanized finish, ASTM A153. 36 37 Gaskets to be EPDM, ASTM D2000. Gaskets for dry systems to be flush seal design. Heat treated carbon steel oval 38 neck track bolts and nuts, ASTM A-183, with zinc electroplated finish. 39 40 Flange adapters to be ductile iron, ASTM A536; except at lug type butterfly valves where standard threaded flanges 41 shall be used. 42 Standard flanges are necessary so that the butterfly valve can be properly bolted to the flange and retain 43 its place in the pipe when piping on one side is removed. 44 45 Credit for the inherent flexibility of mechanical grooved pipe connections when used for expansion joints or flexible 46 connectors may be allowed upon specific application by the Contractor. Three flexible couplings at first three 47 connection points both upstream and downstream of pumps may be used in lieu of flexible connectors. Request for 48 expansion joints shall be made in writing and shall include service, location, line size, proposed application and 49 supporting calculations for the intended service. 50 51 SPRINKLER HEADS

Products of the following 2 manufacturers determined to be equal by the Architect/Engineer will be accepted: Tyco, Reliable, Victaulic and 3 Viking. 4 5 Standard coverage sprinkler heads are to be the basis for design unless noted otherwise on the plans or within these 6 specifications. 7 8 Extended coverage sprinkler heads may not be used without prior approval by DFD. 9 10 Fusible link or glass bulb type, cast brass or bronze construction. Provide heads with nominal 1/2" or 17/32” 11 discharge orifice except where greater than normal density requires large orifice. 12 13 Select fusible link or glass bulb temperature rating to not exceed maximum ambient temperature rating allowed 14 under normal conditions at installed location. Provide ordinary temperature (155 to 165 degree) fusible link or glass 15 bulb type except at skylights, sealed display windows, unventilated attics and roof spaces, over cooking equipment, 16 adjacent to diffusers, unit heaters, uninsulated heating pipes or ducts, mechanical rooms, storage rooms, or where 17 otherwise indicated. 18 19 Provide quantity of spare heads as noted below and 1 wrench for each type of head and each temperature range 20 installed. Provide 6 spare heads per 300 or less installed heads, 12 per 1000 or less and 24 for more than 1000. 21 Provide steel cabinet for storage of heads and wrenches. Provide an equal number of concealed cover plates and/or 22 sprinkler escutcheons for each spare sprinkler head. 23 24 Edit sprinkler head models, types and features for specific applications. Specify guards where 25 mechanical damage is likely. UL 5 Listed and FM approved. 6 7 FLOW SWITCHES 8 Vane type waterflow switch with metal enclosure, adjustable pneumatic retard and electrical characteristics 9 compatible with alarm system. 10 11 PRESSURE SWITCHES 12 Pressure actuated switch with field adjustable settings, metal enclosure and electrical characteristics compatible with 13 alarm system. 14 15 LOCAL ALARM 16 Weatherproof electric horn/strobe with red painted metal housing, mounting base and weatherproof gasket seal, and 17 electrical characteristics compatible with alarm system. The horn strobe should be mounted above or as close as 18 possible to the fire department connection. 19 Local alarm typically is not required at penal and mental institutions with central alarming. 20 21 PRESSURE GAUGES 22 Manufacturer: Ametek/U. Trerice, Weiss, Weksler. 23 24 Cast aluminum, stainless steel, brass, polycarbonate or ABS case of not less than 3.5 inches in diameter, double 25 strength glass window, black lettering on a white background, phosphor bronze bourdon tube with bronze bushings, 26 recalibration from the front of the dial, 99% accuracy over the middle half of the scale, 98.5% accuracy over the 27 remainder of the scale. Size for maximum 30 pressure drop of __ psig at __ GPM. Constructed of bronze or epoxy coated cast iron or stainless steel body with 31 bronze and plastic internal parts, stainless steel springs, silicone rubber valve discs, bronze seats, rated for 175 psig. 32 33 SPECIALTY VALVES 34 Manufacturer: Tyco, Reliable, Victaulic and Viking. 35 36 ALARM CHECK VALVES: 37 Cast or ductile iron body, flanged or grooved ends, 175 psig, bronze grooved seat with o-ring seal, single hitch pin 38 and latch design. Provide trim for bypass, drain, electric sprinkler alarm switch, pressure gages, precision retarding 39 chamber, drip cup assembly piped to floor or hub drain, fill line attachment with strainer. 40 Alarm check valves are seldom used and this should be deleted if it not included in the project. 41 42 DRY PIPE VALVES: 43 Cast or ductile iron body, flanged or grooved ends, 175 psig, bronze grooved seat with o-ring seal, single hitch pin 44 and latch design. Provide trim for air supply, drain, priming level, alarm connections, pressure gages, priming 45 chamber attachment, ball drip valves, drip cup assembly piped to floor or hub drain, fill line attachment with 46 strainer. 47 48 AIR PRESSURE MAINTENANCE DEVICE: 49 Automatic control capable of maintaining system air pressure, rated for 175 psig, adjustable air pressure range of 15 50 to 60 psig, complete with isolation valves, bypass fill valve, pressure regulator or pressure switch and strainer. 51 52 DELUGE/PREACTION VALVES:

Ream ends of piping to remove burrs. Clean scale and dirt from interior and exterior of each 26 section of pipe and fitting prior to assembly. 27 28 ERECTION 29 Install all piping parallel to building walls and ceilings and at heights which do not obstruct any portion of a 30 window, doorway, stairway, or passageway. Where interferences develop in the field, offset or reroute piping as 31 required to clear such interferences. Coordinate locations of fire protection piping with piping, ductwork, conduit 32 and equipment of other trades to allow sufficient clearances. In all cases, consult drawings for exact location of pipe 33 spaces, ceiling heights, ceiling grid layout, light fixtures and grilles before installing piping. 34 35 Where copper or steel piping is embedded in masonry or concrete, provide protective sleeve covering of elastomeric 36 pipe insulation. 37 38 Provide 3/32" min. thickness steel nailing plates behind or on either side of piping where the possibility of 39 penetration from nails or drywall screws exists. 40 41 Maintain piping in clean condition internally during construction. 42 43 Provide clearance for access to valves and piping specialties. 44 45 Provide anchors, expansion joints, swing joints and/or expansion loops so that piping may expand and contract 46 without damage to itself, equipment, or building. 47 48 Install piping so that system can be drained. On threaded piping, bushings are not 2 acceptable. 3 4 Do not route piping within exterior walls. 5 6 Do not route piping through transformer vaults or above transformers, panelboards, or switchboards, including the 7 required service space for this equipment, unless the piping is serving this equipment. 8 This requirement is based on NFPA 70, 384-4 and 450-47. 9 10 Install all valves and piping specialties, including items furnished by others, as specified and/or detailed. Provide 11 access to valves and specialties for maintenance. Make connections to all equipment, fixtures and systems installed 12 by others where same requires the piping services indicated in this section. 13 14 COPPER PIPE JOINTS 15 Remove all slivers and burrs remaining from the cutting operation by reaming and filing both pipe surfaces. Clean 16 fitting and tube with metal brush, emery cloth or sandpaper. Remove residue from the cleaning operation and 17 assemble joint to socket stop. Apply flame to fitting until brazing alloy melts when placed at joint. Wipe excess 18 alloy from joint. 19 20 WELDED PIPE JOINTS 21 Make all welded joints by fusion welding in accordance with ASME Codes, ANSI B31, and State Codes where 22 applicable. Lubricate pipe 44 and coupling gasket, align pipe, and secure joint in accordance with the coupling manufacturer's specifications. 45 46 MECHANICALLY FORMED TEE FITTINGS 47 Form mechanically extracted collars in a continuous operation, consisting of drilling a pilot hole and drawing out the 48 tube surface to form a collar having a height of not less than three times the thickness of the tube wall. Use an 49 adjustable collaring device. Notch and dimple the branch tube. Braze the joint with neutral flame oxy-acetylene 50 torch, applying heat properly so that pipe and tee do not distort; remove distorted connections. 51 52 UNIONS AND FLANGES

Where a valve is located at a piece of 3 equipment, locate the flange or union or grooved coupling combination connections on the equipment side of the 4 valve. Concealed unions, flanges or couplings are not acceptable. 5 6 FLEXIBLE SPRINKLER DROP FITTINGS 7 Install in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions following minimum bend radii, maximum number 8 of bends and bend distance from end requirements. 9 10 PIPING SYSTEM LEAK TESTS 11 Conduct pressure test with test medium of water. If leaks are found, repair the area with new materials and repeat 12 the test; caulking will not be acceptable. 13 14 Test piping in sections or entire system as required by sequence of construction. Do not conceal pipe until it has 15 been successfully tested. If required for the additional pressure load under test, provide temporary restraints at 16 fittings or expansion joints. Entire test must be witnessed by the Division's representative. 17 18 Use clean water and remove air from the piping being tested where possible. Measure and record test pressure at the 19 high point in the system. 20 21 Test system at 200 psi for 2 hours showing no leakage. Where system design is in excess of 150 psig, test at a 22 pressure 50 psig above system design pressure. 23 24 All pressure tests are to be documented on NFPA Contractor's Material and Test Certificate forms. 25 26 UNDERGROUND WATER MAIN FLUSHING 27 Conduct flushing of the underground water/fire main service as required by NFPA 13. The 200 PSI pressure test of 28 the main shall be conducted by the installer of the main. The flushing operation is to be documented on NFPA 29 Underground Contractor's Material and Test Certificate forms. 30 31 INSTALLATION 32 Install fire protection system components in accordance with NFPA rulings, listings and manufacturers 33 recommendations. Locate where accessible for servicing and replacement. 34 35 Sprinkler Heads: Locate sprinkler heads as indicated on fire protection plan and reflected ceiling plan maintaining 36 minimum clearances from obstructions, ceilings and walls. Install sprinkler heads level in locations not subject to 37 spray pattern interference. Provide fire sprinkler head installations below ductwork, soffits, etc. 38 The consultant is responsible for showing sprinkler head locations on drawings and coordinating with 39 architectural, HVAC and electrical work to avoid conflicts If heads need to be centered within ceiling 40 tiles, this requirement must be added to specification language (extra cost involved). 41 42 Switches: Locate flow and pressure switches where indicated and where required to obtain specified zoning to 43 isolate floors and major areas of floors. Provide valved test connection for flow switch adjacent to flow switch. Pipe 44 to floor drain. Test flow switch to verify proper operation. 45 Locations of switches should be shown on drawing for coordination with electrical work. 46 47 Gauges: Provide a valved pressure gauge in main fire protection riser, at the top of each piping riser, at inlet and 48 outlet of pump and elsewhere as indicated. 49 50 Valves: Properly align piping before installation of valves. Do not support weight of piping system on valve ends. 51 Mount valves in locations which allow access for operation, servicing and replacement. Install all valves with the 52 stem in the upright or horizontal position. Valves installed with the stems down will not be accepted. Provide a riser

Provide capped hose thread drain 2 valves to allow draining of each portion of piping. 3 4 Specialty Valves: Install in vertical position fire protection riser. Install trim recommended by manufacturer 5 including drain and test valves. Pipe drains to hub or floor drains. Test and adjust operation of valves, alarms, 6 pressure maintenance devices, emergency pull boxes and deluge/preaction controls. 7 8 Hose Outlet Valves: Install at each standpipe outlet and elsewhere where indicated approximately 4' above floor. 9 10 Fire Department and Fire Pump Test Connections: Mount on wall where indicated. Support from structure 11 independent of piping. Locate between 2' to 3' above grade. Fill wall penetration with insulation and caulk exterior 12 and interior face of wall opening weathertight. 13 14 Air Compressor: Install on concrete housekeeping pad, leveled and bolted in place.
