www.leg.state.vt.us Brandon, Woodward of Johnson, Wright of Burlington and Zuckerman of Burlington Whereas, Kelly Clark is a Vermont native and graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, and Whereas, her affinity for the snowy slopes was developed at the very early age of two when she strapped on her first pair of skis, and

Whereas, at age eight, Kelly, by then a veteran skier, took her first snowboarding lesson, and Whereas, she entered her first snowboarding competition at age 13, and Whereas, during the winter months of her high school years, Kelly attended Mt. Snow Academy, and, in her sophomore year, she finished fourth in the national championships, and Whereas, since joining the U.S. snowboard team in 2000, her performances have been awe-inspiring, and Whereas, in the year 2000, Kelly was a silver medalist at the Goodwill Games and won the world junior halfpipe championship, and Whereas, her amazing snowboarding feats continued in 2001 as she captured the U.S. halfpipe and snowboardcross championships and won the overall 2000-2001 Grand Prix title, and Whereas, immediately before the Winter Olympics, she dazzled the crowds at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, as she won the gold medal, and Whereas, Kelly only mastered her critical inverted aerials one month before the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and Whereas, Kelly’s first run down the halfpipe competition slope, at the Park City, Utah Olympic site, was impressive, but her second time around was unbelievable as she nailed the McTwist maneuver and threw in a superbly- executed 720-degree turn at the end, as she sped to a Winter Olympics’ gold medal victory with a final score of 47.9, and Whereas, Kelly headed down the halfpipe with an aggressive confidence and an inspiring attitude, and Whereas, Kelly handled Olympic pressure with an ear-to-ear grin and a typical Vermont combination of pride and a humble nature, and Whereas, she was joined by the other women of the U.S. team, Trisha Burns, also a Vermont-grown rider, and Shannon Dunn, a pioneer of women’s snowboarding, and Whereas, Kelly rides hard as a team member for a Vermont-based company, Jake Burton Carpenter’s Burton Snowboards, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly is greatly honored to congratulate Kelly Clark of West Dover on winning the 2002 Winter Olympics’ gold medal in the women’s halfpipe competition, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Kelly Clark of West Dover, to her parents Terry and Cathy Clark of West Dover, and to Jake Burton Carpenter at Burton Snowboards in South Burlington.
