Eco-friendly truck cleans up our act

Your twice yearly domestic bulky goods collection days are now contributing to a cleaner environment as well as a cleaner home.

Handybin Waste Services has taken delivery of the flagship of its heavy vehicle fleet; the eco-friendly ACCO 2350G rear loader, which is designed to meet stringent new federal regulations regarding exhaust emissions.

Australian Design Rules 80/02 aim to significantly reduce air pollution, and apply to all heavy transport vehicles built from January 1, 2008.

Handybin’s Equipment Manager, Keith Wilson, says the ACCO is the first of its kind in the region.

“We are very pleased with the new truck. Handybin’s commitment is to implement environmentally sound waste management solutions, and this is just one more step in the right direction,” he says.

“We have also purchased this vehicle through a local company, RH Taylor, and this will hopefully attract and encourage interest among other local heavy vehicle operators in this eco-technology.”

The vehicle is fitted with a Cummins EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Euro 4 diesel engine. Exhaust emissions are greatly reduced and are much cleaner through the innovative EGR technology which pumps exhaust gasses back through the engine where they are then re-burned.

Handybin’s Manager for Domestic Waste Services, Richard Herder says the truck is being used in the domestic collection services for the residents of the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca local government areas.

“This truck is a great asset to the local area. Not only does it contribute to a reduction in emissions, it is our front line truck in the household bulky goods collection service and we now also use it to collect recyclables from units and holiday apartments in the region.”
