I. Title of Article: Cop who killed robbery victim fires again

II. Source of Article: San Antonio Express News 09/12/2009

III. Summary of the Article:

It was a busy Friday morning at a local Mexican restaurant located on the corner

of Carson and Pine Street. San Antonio Police Officer William Karman sat in full

uniform with his family after working an overnight shift. Two armed gunmen walked

into the La Gardenia bakery next door to the restaurant demanding money. When the

cashier refused to give the money up, one of the gunmen fired a shot into the ceiling.

A customer pointed out the two gunmen to Officer Karman, who immediately jumped

into action. Officer Karman confronted the gunmen and a shootout ensued with

Officer Karman firing two shots. A foot chase began and the gunmen were able to

enter a vehicle and get away. Officer Karman fired three more shots at the gunmen,

but it was unclear if any of them were hit. This was the second shootout Officer

Karman had been in since August 30th. Officer Karman was flagged down for a

robbery in progress. When he arrived he observed three subjects beating a man on

the ground. One of the subjects turned toward Officer Karman with a gun in hand.

Officer Karman fired two shots striking the suspect in the leg, when the suspect

continued to make advancements toward him, Officer Karman fired three more times striking the victim once in the chest. The victim later died from his wounds. Officer

Karman was the 14th officer this year to use deadly force.

VII. I chose this article because it shows others how quickly a situation can go bad. If officers are not prepared it could result in their own death as well as others. Mental preparation is a must in the field of law enforcement, especially when off duty.

Nobody can predict the future but it must always stay in your mind that danger can always be within a blink of an eye.
