Exercise 5 Briefing

Assayii Lake Fire Navajo Indian Reservation, NM

Cause: Human caused Start: June 13, 2014

Background: The Assayii Lake Fire was started on June 13, 2014 at about noon in the vicinity of the Bowl (Assayii) Lake Campground. It is believed to have been human caused. The fire exploded on the night of June 15 due to high winds. SW Type 2 IMT has been assigned. Some homes in the communities of Naschitti and Sheep Springs have been evacuated.

Extreme fire behavior and high winds, with gusts up to 50 mph, have limited the ability to fight the fire head on. Aviation resources have been periodically grounded due to high winds. Fuels include pinyon pine, juniper, and ponderosa pine at higher elevations and sage/grass at lower elevations. Incident personnel have provided a rough perimeter derived from aerial reconnaissance.

Final acreage was 14,712. Cost of containment approx. $7.4M, 28 structures lost.
