A story based on the folktale Too Much Noise.
A long time ago there was a librarian. Her name was Petra and she worked in an old, old library.
The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Too noisy,” said Petra.
Petra went to see the mayor of the village. “What can I do?” “The library makes too much noise. The chair creaks. The door squeaks. The people in the library talk. Chatter Chatter. The checkout computer beeps. Beep Beep”
“I can help you,” the mayor said. “I know what you can do.” “What?” said Petra. “Get a baby,” said the mayor.
“What good is a baby?” said Petra. But Petra got a baby anyhow.
The baby said, “Waa waa.” The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Too noisy,” said Petra.
And she went back to the mayor. “Get a cell phone,” said the mayor. “What good is a cell phone?” said Petra. But Petra got a cell phone anyhow.
1 The cell phone said, “Ring ring.” The baby said, “Waa waa.” The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Too noisy,” said Petra.
And she went back to the mayor.
“Get a pencil,” said the mayor. “What good is a pencil?” said Petra. But Petra got a pencil anyhow.
The pencil said, “Wack wack.” The cell phone said, “Ring ring.” The baby said, “Waa waa.” The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Too noisy,” said Petra.
And she went back to the mayor.
“Get a loud talker,” said the mayor. “What good is a loud talker?” said Petra. But Petra got a loud talker anyhow. The loud talker said, “BLAH BLAH BLAH.” The pencil said, “Wack wack.” The cell phone said, “Ring ring.” The baby said, “Waa waa.” The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter
2 The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Too noisy,” said Petra.
And she went back to the mayor.
“Run the faucet and slam the bathroom door, too.” “What good is running the faucet and slamming the bathroom door?” But Petra ran the faucet and slammed the bathroom door anyhow.
The faucet said, “Gurgle, gurgle.” The bathroom door said, “Slam, slam.”
The loud talker said, “BLAH BLAH BLAH.” The pencil said, “Wack wack.” The cell phone said, “Ring ring.” The baby said, “Waa waa.” The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep
Now Petra was angry. She went to the mayor. ‘I told you the library was too noisy,” she said. I told you The chair creaked. The door squeaked. The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep
You told me to get a baby. All day the baby says, “Waa waa.” You told me to get a cell phone. All day the cell phone says,”Ring ring.”
3 You told me to get a pencil. All day the pencil says,”Wack wack”. You told me to get a loud talker. All day the loud talker says, “BLAH BLAH BLAH.” You told me to run the faucet and slam the bathroom door. All day the faucet says, “gurgle gurgle” and the bathroom door says,”slam slam”.
I am going crazy!,’ said Petra.
The mayor said, “Do what I tell you. Let the baby go. Let the cell phone go. Let the pencil go. Let the loud talker go. Turn the faucet off. Close the bathroom door gently.”
So Petra let the baby go. She let the cell phone go. She let the pencil go. She let the loud talker go. She turned the faucet off. She closed the bathroom door gently.
Now no baby said, “Waa waa” No cell phone said, “Ring ring” No pencil said, “Wack wack” No loud talker said,”BLAH BLAH BLAH” No faucet said, “Gurgle gurgle”. No bathroom door said, “Slam slam”.
The chair creaked. “Ah,” said Petra. “What a quiet noise.” The door squeaked. “Ah,” said Petra. “What a quiet noise.”
The people in the library talked. Chatter Chatter The checkout computer beeped. Beep Beep “Ah. Oh,” said Petra. “How quiet our library is.”
Petra was happy to be at work at the library and never complained about too much noise again!
