DiamondKote Resurfacing FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the DiamondKote Concrete System? The DK Concrete System is a colored portland cement blended with a modified acrylic bonding resin, the system is applied with an air sprayer to the surface and bonds into the concrete pours as one. A durable acrylic polymer clear seal coat is applied as a top coat periodically to maintain wearability. How long has this Product been in use? Cementious resurfacing products have been in use since the 70’s. Acrylic Resurfacing has been in use since the early 70’s. Properly maintained surfaces can last indefinitely. How does the Product Bond with existing concrete? The existing concrete Is acid etched and power washed to clean off dirt, remove loose aggregate and open the pores. Next, a skim coat of acrylic modified resin and a base color portland cement blend is applied to the surface as thin as possible. This allows maximum absorption of the acrylic into the existing concrete rather than building up the existing surface. When the base coat dries, it is absorbed into the pores and strengthens the existing concrete. The new application and the original surface become an integrated piece. How thick is it applied? The thinner we can apply the mixture the better, usually between 3/32” to 1/8”. The skim coat can be applied up to 2” thick to fill in low areas, level areas and fill holes. Areas that require fill greater than 2” will be filled with a portland cement gravel mix over a coat of bonding agent, prior to the skim coat being applied. Will the cold weather effect the DK System? The product was tested by subjecting it to a 60 day freeze thaw cycle. This means that it was frozen and thawed 60 consecutive times with no adverse effect. It is stronger and denser than concrete and will hold up to cold weather much longer than normal concrete. We cannot eliminate heaving and cracking of concrete. However, once your existing concrete is surfaced with the DK Concrete System, the surface will be denser and less porous, less water will be retained by the concrete and therefore, lessen the effects of freeze damage. Can the DK Concrete System be applied in cold weather? Yes, we can use heaters to warm the surface and speed up drying time in cold weather. How does the DK Concrete System provide protection from stains, oil spills, salt damage and discoloration? The special durable acrylic sealer that is applied to the surface of the system is non-porous and UV protective. Stains can’t penetrate it. Clean up is simple. No other surface can offer such beauty and protection. Will the DK Concrete System wear off? The DK Concrete System will not show normal wear providing the acrylic sealer is replaced as noticeable wear occurs. We estimate this to take place no sooner than 3 years under normal traffic conditions. As long as the acrylic is in good condition, normal traffic won’t wear through the colored surface. What colors does it come in? DiamondKote has virtually limitless color combinations to choose from. Most applications are of the popular “earth-tones” but custom colors are available on special orders at an additional cost. Why should I repair my concrete rather than replacing it? If you replace your concrete you will be paying the cost of tear-out, removal, forming and pouring concrete, which is 20% - 25% higher than a DiamonKote application. This also takes larger equipment than the DK Concrete System, which usually causes damage to landscaping. When complete you will have new concrete that will stain, absorb oil stains, can be damaged by salts and have a strength of about 2500 to 3,000 PSI. Repairing concrete with DK Concrete System will strengthen the existing concrete to over 7,200 PSI, resist stains, oil spills and salt damage. Additionally, it can be designed and will add value to your home while making an attractive presentation of your concrete surfaces. Why wouldn’t I want to use Brick Pavers? Brick Pavers have the tendency to heave after a year or so. The pattern will become very inconsistent throughout the walkway or patio. Also, molding, chalking, chipping, stone dusting, and weed growth is very common between the pavers. Periodically the surface will have to be dug up and reset , at your cost.
Is there any type of Warrantee offered? The DK Concrete system has a limited Residential 12 year manufacturers warranty against fading, delaminating and normal product failure. This warranty is based upon periodic cleaning and re-sealing the area specified in your warrantee. Cracks and heaves in the concrete are not covered but will be drastically reduced with a DK Concrete System applied. Commercial warranty is 2 years.
What if something happens to my concrete after the warranty expires? The DK Concrete System will virtually last a lifetime if it is properly maintained. It is easily repaired to its original state at any time during its useful life. What do I have to do to maintain the DK Concrete System? You should maintain your concrete the same as you do the rest of your home. Care and cleaning hints will be provided upon completion of the installation. Can you cover up the control and expansion joints? No. The control and expansion joints are there to permit the concrete to move. If the existing control and expansion joint were not properly placed when the concrete was poured, we will cut the necessary control joints into the concrete to keep it from further random cracking. Can you repair damaged or heaved concrete? Yes. Damaged and heaved concrete can be ground down or cut out and replaced with new concrete. Once dried, the new concrete will be bonded to the existing concrete prior to the base coat. This saves the cost and mess of tearing out and replacing all the concrete. Can you fix cracks in the existing concrete? Yes. We repair cracks by “V” grinding the cracked areas and filling them with DK unique crack weld system. The “V” shape of the channel forces the epoxy to the bottom of the crack providing a maximum strength repair. A tension relief joint is then cut over the crack to control re-cracking. Can the DK Concrete System be used to change the pitch of my concrete? Yes. It is important to have concrete sloped to take water away from the foundation. DK Concrete Systems are installed in different thicknesses to change the pitch of the existing concrete. How long does it take to complete a job? An average job will take one to three days depending on the condition of the concrete. If new concrete is poured as part of the repair or enlargement process, the DK Concrete system cannot be applied for at least 7 days. How soon can I use the concrete after the DK concrete System is completed? Normal foot traffic, excluding high heels, after 24 hours; vehicle traffic after 7 days. Use cardboard under tires and shims under equipment or table legs for at least 28 days. Can I use this product around my pool? Yes. This is an excellent product for around pools. It is non-skid, cooler than concrete, will not stain or be effected by chemicals, and will blend the old concrete into the beauty of your yard. Over what surfaces can the DK System be applied? DK Products can be applied over any porous material both vertical and horizontal. When applied on horizontal surface materials that will be subjected to traffic, that surface must be concrete, stone, slate, brick, river rock, cool deck or plywood, but the wood surface must be covered with backer board first. Is it cool to walk on in hot weather? 20%-30% cooler than brick pavers 40%-50% cooler than tile 50%-60% cooler than terrazzo 40%-50% cooler than wood decks 50% cooler than vinlyl or polyurethanes 30%-40% cooler than epoxied stone 10%-40% cooler than concrete
