General Meeting Minutes

Date: 3-11-14

Time: 7:03

Place: WHS Library

Attendance: Susanne Kahler, Tia Brierton, Maura Walsh-Copeland, Chris Vann, William Shipp, Pam Hayba, Phoebe Smith, Diane Bath, Nichelle Watts-Rivera, Denise Hawthorne, Jackie Erb.

Phoebe made a motion to approve minutes from 2-11-14 and seconded by Chris Vann. Minutes approved.

Officers’ Reports:

President (Susanne Kahler):

1. Dinner and Show volunteers thanked.

1st Vice President (Phoebe Smith):

1. Shenandoah teacher of the year nominations coming to a close on March 28th. Teachers putting together portfolios.

2. Working on 5K bunny hop.

2nd Vice President (Chris Vann):

1. Coffee fundraising cancelled last week due to snow days. Prior week $50 made. This Wednesday will continue again. Currently selling $3 per 16 oz cup.

Treasurer (Tia Brierton):

1. Printed report provided. Have not deposited cash and checks from dinner and show but have in Paypal $1165.85 specifically for this event (GNP). GNP has $3442. 23 currently. General funds for PTSO are $8422.47. Received first check $945.00 from Kaplan classes. First class successful but second class low on participants. Chris provided money (cash) from coffee fundraiser and Tia will add to GNP fund. Upcoming fundraisers (VIP seating and flowers).

Other Official Reports:

Volunteer Coordinator (Christy Hollar): Absent

MSACC (Nichelle Watts-Rivera):

1. MSAAC meeting last month went over upcoming academic achievement fair on April 19th 11:00 to 3:00 at Tuscarora

2. This month MSAAC meeting reviewed proposed budget and how clusters (groups of schools) can benefit from budget. Talked about class size of elementary—and full day kindergarten

3. Have attended “Twenty” club for boys and girls middle school and high school age. They have a lot of member s from Valley and willing to add Woodgrove members. Started in 2012 for boys to address achievement gap and address homework, etc.

LEAP representative (Maura Walsh-Copeland):

1. LEAP February meeting cancelled due to snow. Was to be about internet safety.

2. Tomorrow’s meeting about STEM-will summarize and put on web.

Webmaster (Maura Walsh-Copeland):

1. Will process next request for 5K.

Staff Representative (Kelley Hines): Absent

Principal (William Shipp)

1. 11th grade SOL March 18 and 19th.

2. May SOL and AP testing schedule provided (see attached printed sheet).

3. First week of May is teacher appreciation week. Possible ideas luncheon, coffee cart Monday, candy treats, etc.

4. Senior Scholarships- see counseling department

5. Safety drills this month-tornado preparedness, lockdown.

6. Safety Presentations by LCSO (Loudoun County Safety Officer) upcoming on March 17th about Internet Safety and on March 24th about Drug Awareness Program in Woodgrove Auditorium.

7. Science Fair on March 20th at Tuscarora High School. 8. March 28th is end of 3rd quarter.

9. March 31st is student holiday/teacher workday.

10. April 1st is Rising 9th grade expo day.

11. April 9th Report Cards will be sent home.

12. April 14th through 18th is spring break.

Old Business: None

New Business:

1. Nominating Committee- April 10th, Diane Bath volunteered for secretary, Phoebe volunteered to remain as 1st VP, Tia- will not remain as treasurer. Renee volunteered to continue with newsletter. Carina will not continue as hospitality chair.

2. Scholarship committee needed- last year 20 applicants for each. Cannot submit same essay for both. Nichelle, Maura, and Diane will make up the committee.

3. PTSO logo – Renee presented ideas (printed on attached sheet) for logo and banner. Currently Woodgrove Weekly has logo from each group next to their content area. Long banner for header and paw print and WHS PTSO for logo. Discussed PTSO overarching parent group over other parent groups and the use of the crest instead of the paw. Renee will contact Mr. Hicks to get digital form of crest.

Announcements :

1. Pam Hayba announced “Share and Shop” coming up March 29th. Donations will be collected the week prior. Harmony girl scouts assisting with this event. Cafeteria will be set up as store.
