A Prayer for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

A Prayer for the Victims of the Earthquake in Haiti

God of all creation, who led the chosen people into the promised land, lead those dispossessed of shelter to a place of refreshment, rest and security.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who led a life of compassion and service to others, challenge us to respond to the needs of any who are fallen, broken or alone.

Spirit of life, inspire our hearts and give us the strength to come to the assistance of our brothers and sisters in need.

O God, our refuge and strength, comfort of all who suffer; help all the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Comfort them in their sorrow and mourning.

Restore their hope and sustain them in their suffering.

Give strength to all who now work with the refugees from this disaster and all who are working to rebuild what was destroyed.

Provide your wisdom to those who have begun planning to rebuild not only structures but the lives of people, especially the poor, who have been victims of injustice as much as victims of the storm.

Holy Mary, Gentle Mother, cradle within your arms those who have died, and intercede for those who mourn them.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, patron of Haiti, be with those who suffer so greatly.

Venerable Pierre Toussaint, born a slave in Haiti, who gave shelter to orphans, bring comfort to the children, especially those who have lost their parents. Saint Francis of Assisi, patron of the poor, pray that God might show us the way to relieve the terrible sufferings of these days.

Good Saint Anthony, patron of the lost, lead all who are stranded or homeless back to those who love them.

Loving God, we are the gift of your compassion!

Today, we open our hearts to the working of your Spirit, who strengthens and empowers us to be compassionate persons.

May our words, beliefs and actions contribute to your healing presence in the lives of our brothers and sisters in need at this time.

We ask this in the name of Jesus, our brother and Lord.

Amen.
