Each consultant does two ward rounds a week, with one being a combined teaching and peer review round. Trainee office is collocated with consultant offices and an "open door" policy is encouraged. All trainee clinics are directly supervised by at least one consultant and all patients are discussed with the consultant or reviewed by the consultant. All referrals and consults in the hospital are reviewed by the trainee, and then form the basis of a case based discussions with one or more of the consultants. There is always a consultant rheumatologist available on site during office hours and there is a rheumatology consultant on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There are periods of the week with no clinics and adequate junior staff cover to enable project work, presentation preparation, teaching research and self directed reading.

Rheumatology patients are preferentially placed in a ward adjacent to the departmental offices and outpatient area.
