Spalding smash century barrier

Premier Division champions elect Spalding smashed the hundred goal barrier in their 28 th league game of the season at AFC Kempston on 25th February. Dan Cotton scored the milestone goal, the sixth in an 8-1 Hillgrounds success. Four days earlier the Tulips had scored seven unanswered goals at Stewarts & Lloyds, a perfect response to the loss of their 100% away record in a 1-1 stalemate at Wisbech on 8th February. The Tulips ended February with a massive 22 point lead at the top of the Premier, and to illustrate their all round strength, had kept nineteen clean sheets.

The recent goal sprees have been achieved despite the absence of Premier Division top scorer Andy Tidswell who is currently awaiting an MRI scan which will determine whether he will return to action before the end of the campaign. Better news though is the return of utility man Jonny Allen to full training and it is hoped he will be back in action before season’s end. The latest addition to the injured list is defender Jamie Stevens who is likely to spend a further couple of weeks on the sidelines with a chipped collarbone.

Tulips boss Pat Rayment has strengthened his squad for the run in by signing Boston Town top scorer Josh Ford and bringing Lincoln City teenager Jordan Thomas back to the Halley Stewart Field for a second month on loan. Spalding have also recruited a couple of Imps youngsters on work experience, defender Nick Green and midfielder Kegan Everington.

More managerial changes at Stewarts & Lloyds

Recent managerial activity at Stewarts & Lloyds has seen Sean Mason step down from the Foundrymen management team due to a change of work circumstances. Mason had enjoyed a successful time with the reserves and took charge of the senior side after Kevin Byrne’s departure at Christmas.

With no candidates emerging for the first team vacancy chairman John Davies and committee man Kevin King have been running the senior side while ex-Desborough and Corby youth team boss Kevin Cushen has taken the reserve team reins. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Fenmen duo head down under

Wisbech’s squad has been depleted by the departure of two players who have headed off to sunnier climes down under. Wide man Callum Stocks is going to play in Australia for Joondalup United in Perth while top scorer Tom James is also heading off to Oz to take up a coaching position in Canberra.

On the plus side defender Jon Fairweather has rejoined the Fenmen after a brief spell with league rivals Spalding.

Sileby rebuild continues

Sileby have continued their squad rebuild in recent weeks although the pace has slowed down somewhat from Daren Young’s first few weeks at the helm.

Former Bury defender Luke Beastall has transferred from Oadby, having also had a spell with Rugby, while front man Lee Thompson has joined Rangers from Desborough.

The club has also extended the loan of Kettering striker Jake Newman for a second month.

Marks back at the Cogenhoe helm

Andy Marks has returned to the Cogenhoe dugout this month after a fourteen week absence travelling abroad. His first two games back at the helm have seen the Cooks share the spoils with fellow high fliers Huntingdon and AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

The reserve side’s title prospects have been boosted by the return to Compton Park of Reserve Division leading marksman Charlie Wixon after a brief spell with Wellingborough.

More new faces for Desborough

Desborough manager Ian Walker has continued to introduce new faces to the Ar Tarn squad in recent weeks.

The latest member of his Thrapston squad to team up with the Desborough boss again is full back Aidan Bradshaw who joins from Sileby, while another newcomer is midfielder Connor Kennedy from Stewarts & Lloyds. Most experienced capture is midfielder Phil Cassidy from Cogenhoe.

Away from the playing side, committee man John Sampson has now been allowed home from Coventry Walsgrave Hospital after operations on leg injuries suffered in a road accident on the way back from Desborough’s match at Yaxley on 18th January. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Holbeach name new stand after stalwart

Holbeach have recently constructed a small stand behind one of the goals at the Carters Park ground and it has been decided to name the structure the ‘Pete Cousins Stand’ to mark the contribution made to the club over a 65 year period by the Tigers stalwart.

83 year old Pete is the club groundsman and also washes the kit among many other behind the scenes duties at Carters Park.

On the field manager Glen Maddison has added a couple of new players to his squad. Midfield man James Reed has joined the Tigers from Boston United while defender Max Mattless has been recruited from March.

Defender Lewis Sturman did well enough in his trial period in Finland to be offered a contract to play there for Palloseura Kemi Kings and is now considering whether to take up the opportunity.

Two new faces for Buckby

Long Buckby, newly plunged into a relegation battle after their six point deduction, have snapped up a couple of new faces to strengthen their defence for the run in to the campaign.

Full back Lewis Travers has been playing for Easington Sports, having previously played for Buckby boss Phil Mason at Woodford, while one time Buckby skipper Rick Kimbell has returned to Station Road from Northants Combination side Brixworth.

Huntingdon book final place

Huntingdon continue to excel on all fronts and have booked a place in their first final of the season, the Hinchingbrooke Cup. The Cromwellians were on top of their game in the semi final as they saw off in form co-holders Yaxley 5-0 at Jubilee Park.

Two goals from Stuart Eason and singles from Declan Rogers, Jacob Joyce and Ben Seymour-Shove took Huntingdon into the final, but they face a wait to see who their opponents will be as the other half of the draw has only reached the quarter final stage.

A departure from the Town squad is Niks Savalnieks who has moved on to neighbours Godmanchester in search of regular football. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Plummer takes the Sports reins

Former Peterborough Northern Star manager Chris Plummer is back in UCL management with Peterborough Sports. The one time England Under 21 cap, who played in the pro game for Queens Park Rangers, Barnet and Peterborough, was offered the Lincoln Road job after Sports parted company with promotion winning manager Seamus Morgan in early February.

Plummer enjoyed success with Northern Star in a three year spell in charge, leading them to promotion to the Premier Division, success in the League Knockout and Hinchingbrooke Cups and the quarter finals of the FA Vase. He then joined Conference North club Corby Town as assistant boss, later taking the reins after Ian Sampson’s departure. He left the Steelmen in August 2013.

The new Sports manager has started a rebuild in his playing staff, bringing in a sprinkling of his former Star players in Huntingdon defender Mark Cox, Stilton defender or midfielder Mark Baines and Whittlesey full back Dave Kilby. One time Peterborough United goalkeeper Luke McShane has also signed after two years out of football.

Other new faces in the Sports ranks are Peterborough Northern Star striker Ondre Odain and defender Tom Hutton from Peterborough League club Ryhall, while midfielder Gerard Evans has rejoined the club after a brief spell with league rivals Blackstones.

Mazzarella to take Bourne job

Bourne Town have announced that Raff Mazzarella will take over as the Wakes’ first team manager at the end of the current season.

Mazzarella is currently in charge of the Peterborough Northern Star second string, leading them to the Reserve Knockout Cup final and contesting the title issue with reigning champions Cogenhoe. Prior to joining Star this season he was ‘A’ team manager of Peterborough Sports, leading them to title success in the Peterborough League last term.

Long serving Darren Munton will continue as first team boss until the end of the season.

The recent bad weather saw the roof of the home dressing room damaged at the Abbey Lawn. Repairs have now been carried out while upgrading work on the club’s floodlights is earmarked to take place in the next few weeks.

Management reshuffle at Bugbrooke

A recent backroom reshuffle at Bugbrooke has seen Pete Smith step down as first team manager after just a few weeks in charge, although he will continue with the club as a player.

Assistant Chris Brown steps up to take the reins at Birds Close. He joined the Badgers as Graham Derby’s right hand man with the reserves last season, and then took charge of the second string early in the current campaign.

Glen Moore will assist Brown. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Oadby unveil academy plans

An exciting development announced by Oadby Town will see them link up with GMEG to set up an academy for 16 and 17 year footballers next season. The students will study for a BTEC qualification while receiving football coaching.

On the field the Poachers have continued to strengthen their squad as they push for promotion to the Premier Division. They have signed Theo Brown, a midfielder who was player of the year at Hinckley last season while a defensive capture is Jay Smedley who arrives from Shepshed.

Two Barwell players have also signed on dual registration, defender Declan Towers and midfielder Eliot Putman.

The club has now been removed from the Leicestershire Westerby Cup after playing the cup tied Callum Earls in their quarter final win over Loughborough University.

Fardell set for Arrows return

Harrowby co-manager Mark Fardell is recovering well after his recent hip replacement and is expecting to return to the Arrows’ management team during March.

Midfielder Sam Kirton has returned to the Harrowby squad after ten weeks on the sidelines with a groin problem.

Two in two out for Blackstones

Recent player movement has seen two players join Blackstones and another two leave.

Arriving at Lincoln Road are Yaxley pair, left back Alex Lyon and winger Matt Barber. The latter suffered a broken leg in last season’s Hinchingbrooke Cup final, and on returning to fitness struggled to get much playing time with the Cuckoos.

Experienced goalkeeper Lee Crockett has left the club to join Southern League Premier Division outfit Bedford Town while Gerard Evans has returned to Peterborough Sports.

Stones have applied to re-enter the league’s Reserve Division next season after a one year absence.

Burton bring in new faces

Burton Park have been active in the last month adding a quartet of new faces to their squad.

Star signing is midfielder or forward Deven Ellwood who has returned to Latimer Park after a spell with top flight AFC Rushden & Diamonds. Also switching from Premier football is midfield man Adam Randall from Desborough.

Joining from Division One rivals are Whitworth front runner Ben Wharton and ex-Rothwell Corinthians man Tommy Newman. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Royals strengthen squad

Potton have enjoyed a good start to 2014, and remain unbeaten in Division One since the turn of the year.

The Royals have added a number of new faces to the squad in recent weeks. Goalkeeper Dale Hamilton has been snapped up from AFC Kempston while recruits from Cambs League football are Hardwick defender Sam Sabey and prolific scorer Scott Kingsbury from Foxton. Robins recruit three

Buckingham have added three new faces to their squad in recent weeks as they prepare for a busy run in to the season.

Star signing is that of front runner Dom Lawless, who has returned to Manor Fields after departing for Banbury back in October.

Thrapston make experienced signings

Thrapston have added an experienced campaigner to their ranks by recruiting 41 year old Chris Hope. The defender made over 500 Football League appearances with Scunthorpe and Gillingham and was then a key man with Rushden & Diamonds in the Conference. He also featured in the new AFC Rushden & Diamonds squad in their first season of adult football.

Another signing with Diamonds connections in goalscoring winger Jack Wisniewski, more recently with Wellingborough, while a third newcomer is Irchester midfielder Craig Jackson.

Fenmen set to hit the road again

Wisbech Town continue to fly the league flag in the FA Vase after a notable Fifth Round success, 2-1 at Thurlow Nunn League pacesetters Hadleigh. The Suffolk club took a 27 th minute lead through Shane Wardley only for Jon Fairweather to mark his return to Wisbech colours with a 43 rd minute leveller. With eight minutes left Danny White was brought down in the box and Tom James netted from the spot to take Wisbech into the last eight of the national competition for the first time since 1989.

The quarter final draw was unkind, sending Wisbech to Wessex League title favourites Sholing. The away tie is the Fenmen’s fifth in this season’s competition and seventh in a row in the Vase.

The Fenmen’s total prize money winnings now amount to £7,200.

Poachers and Doughboys through to last four

Recent action in the League Knockout Cup has seen Boston Town and Wellingborough see off lower grade opponents to join Deeping in the semi final line up.

Boston beat Potton 3-0 in their Tattershall Road quarter final with second half goals from Daryl Clare, Sam Loughran and Jordan Nuttell putting paid to the Royals. Wellingborough were convincing 4-1 winners at Lutterworth Athletic with two goals apiece for Jason Turner and Scott Cross.

Rothwell Corinthians are the only Division One survivors, they face AFC Kempston in the final Second Round tie in early March. Awaiting the winners in the last quarter final are Huntingdon who progressed 2-1 at Wisbech with late goals from Chris Jones and Ben Seymour-Shove.

Northants quartet book final places

Four Northamptonshire sides have booked places in county cup finals in recent weeks.

In the Hillier Senior Cup Cogenhoe will meet step 4 Daventry in the Sixfields final after disposing of league rivals Long Buckby 3-0 with a Sam Heavey brace and Jack Bowen effort.

In the Junior Cup ON Chenecks booked their final place with a 3-0 win over Burton Park, Jez Hindle, Ben Lewington and Ben Diamond sharing the goals. Chenecks will meet Northants Combination side Brixworth in the Sixfields final after their 3-1 win over the Peterborough Northern Star second string.

The Lower Junior Cup final will be an all UCL affair between the Whitworth and Rothwell Corinthians second strings. Corinths were first to book their final place with a 3-2 extra time success at Clipston, overturning a two goal deficit to progress with goals from Merson Styles, Adam Newman and Callum Plowright. The Flourmen joined them with a 4-2 derby victory at Wollaston, the goals shared by Morgan Addison, Taylor Orosz, Remy Brittain and Simon Anderson with a penalty. Wellingborough’s Dog & Duck ground will stage the final of the competition. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE

Spencer reach Reserve final

Northampton Spencer have reached the final of the Reserve Knockout Cup in their first season back in the league.

The Millers beat Bugbrooke 2-1 at Birds Close in their semi final tie.

The Badgers took the lead through Niall Duffy but Zak Williams levelled shortly afterwards and Jordan Richards plundered a late Spencer winner.

Spencer will meet Peterborough Northern Star in the final.

Whaley and Stocking take managerial awards

The first managerial awards of 2014, covering both January and February combined due to the reduced amount of football played, have been won by Yaxley chief Brett Whaley in the Premier Division and Jeff Stocking of Oadby Town in Division One.

In the top flight Yaxley started the new year with a shock home defeat by Sileby, but followed up with a fine run of wins to move into the top four of the Premier Division. The Cuckoos saw off Desborough, Long Buckby, Sleaford and Holbeach without conceding a goal before extending their sequence of victories to five with a 2-1 defeat of Harborough.

In Division One Oadby have had a successful start to the new year with a haul of sixteen points from six matches extending their advantage at the top of the table to twelve points. The Poachers’ six games during January and February saw them plunder a remarkable 34 goals, including home wins over Buckingham (9-1) and Irchester (9-0) and an 8-0 success at Thrapston, their biggest victory on their travels this season. The award is Jeff Stocking’s second of the campaign.

Meade the top marksman again

Oadby Town’s Courtney Meade has again topped the league’s domestic scorecharts over the first two months of 2014 to capture his second Goalscorer of the Month accolade, having previously scooped the November prize.

Meade was the Oadby marksman in their Knockout Cup defeat at Deeping in the Poachers’ first game of the year, and was also on target in the league defeat of Buckingham before hitting a hat trick against Irchester to start February with a bang.

After drawing a blank against Olney he returned to the goal standard with further strikes against Blackstones, Irchester and Thrapston, all away from home, to take his January and February goal tally to eight in seven matches.

Meade ended February at the head of the Division One goalscorers’ list with 29 to his name in domestic action. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE
