To the Lighthouse Character Presentations and Dinner Party

I. Character Presentations, due Mon. 2/22 Your mission: Really get to know your chosen character. Consider:  Who is he/she?  How old?  Relations to others in the novel?  Profession and/or likes/dislikes?  Motivations? What makes this character tick? Why does he behave as he does?  What he/she thinks of others?  Images and symbols associated with this character. You will need to support your ideas with text.

You will have time this week to work together with your group. Your group will give a 4-minute MAX (practice!) presentation on Monday Feb. 22 summarizing your research for the class. All group members will participate. AVOID doing the following on your PP/Prezi: 1. Reading from the PP/Prezi (use notes/notecards). Most of your teaching should be verbal…the PP/Prezi should act only as a visual aid to enhance what you are saying. 2. Too much text 3. Few or no images 4. Text that is too small for the class and teacher to read

II. Dinner Party, due Tues. 2/24 (we’ll use a script provided by me) Your group is also responsible for playing your character at our rendition of the dinner party (Ch. 17). You will need to decide:  Who will represent the outer and inner voices of your character? Those people will act and read during the scene.  What prop, costume item or symbol these members of your group will hold or wear to represent your character. Everybody should be able to recognize your character from this prop/costume item/symbol.  Group members who are not acting are responsible for bringing food and/or props for the dinner party.

You will also:  bring a plate, silverware, and glass for your character PLUS a prop from this list: 1. Boeuf en Daube (Mrs. R.) 4. Salt shaker (Lily) 8. 8 candles with candlesticks 2. Bowl of fruit (Rose) 5. Large tablecloth (Lily) (Jasper) 3. Large white napkin 6. Napkin (Mr. R.) 9. Napkin (Mr. T.) (Carmichael) 10.Soup tureen and ladle 7. Green shawl (Mr. Bankes (Minta) Extra credit will be available to group members if your group brings REAL FOOD for the dinner party! (Yes, you will all be able to eat the food. It’s a party!)

Characters (10 groups): Mrs. Ramsay* Minta* Mr. Ramsay* Paul The Ramsay sons (Andrew, Roger, Lily Briscoe* The Ramsay daughters (Prue, Jasper, James: note that Andrew Mr. Bankes* Nancy, Rose, Cam: note that Nancy arrives late and James is likely also Mr. Tansley* comes late to the party and Cam is in bed) Mr. Carmichael in bed) A star (*) indicates that this character has outer and inner voices. Both voices need a prop/costume item/symbol. To the Lighthouse Character Presentations and Dinner Party Rubric
