Cover Letter Information

*If you are truly interested in the school and program, attach any and all letters of recommendation you have collected, if not, go ahead and just send this and your resume, the coach will ask for a letter of recommendation from you if he/she wants any.

*If you have any sort of personal contact with the team or coach personalize a section of this letter! Let the coach know you have been attending his/her camps since you were ten years old, or maybe your mom is alumni, or that a player you looked up to attends(ed) the school and you would love to follow in their footsteps. Things like that make you independent, special and stand out a bit.

*If this coach is “local” – meaning within a couple of hours away, please attach a schedule of your seasonal games (MSSF and State League/High School) in case the coach will be in the area.

*This is your chance to “sell yourself” so make it count. However, you need to have done some research on the soccer program/school first! Be sure to get on the computer and read the coaches bio, check out the roster and learn the players a bit, know the team’s previous season record as well as any pertinent academic information. For example, if you want to major in History make sure the school has an adequate history program. Double check all information before sending this out!

Dear Coach {Last Name of Head Coach} and Coach {Last Name of Assistant Coach}

My name is {enter name}. I am a {enter age}-year-old {enter school year, ex: sophomore} from {Enter City, State}. I would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and get some information about your program.

{Enter general soccer information about yourself here. Include positions, special qualities you have as a player, any special recognitions (captain roles, top scorer, etc). Discuss} Example: I am currently the captain of my club soccer team, The Collierville Lobos. I play center- midfielder as well as outside-midfield and striker occasionally. My club team is a Division I select, traveling squad that competes with the best in the state of Tennessee as well as elite tournaments such as Atlanta Cup and the Vulcan Cup. I have an extremely loud voice, which helps my leadership skills, as well as quick feet, particularly my right foot, which gives me a technical edge. I enjoy high- paced games and am especially good at maintaining possession for my team. I have a knack for striking long-distance shots, and was the 2nd leading goal-scorer on my team last season. I am a versatile player and love to take on new challenges from different positions as well as taking on difficult opponents. I have a small frame but have worked on my speed and agility to beat out my “bigger competition”. I was a member of my high school varsity team my freshman year coming off the bench, and am looking for a starting position at outside midfield this coming season. My Collierville High School team won the district tournament and took 2nd place in Tennessee High School State Soccer Tournament my freshman year.

I have had a chance to research {enter University name} as well as review your soccer program. It appears to be a great program. {If applicable: I have already completed your online questionnaire from your website.} I feel as though I would fit in well and have a positive effect on your program. {Enter anything personal! For example: My former high school teammate, Sally Smith, is currently a freshman at your college and has told me how much she enjoys the school and the program. OR: My older brother attended your University and is now a successful accountant at FedEx. I would like to follow in his footsteps.}

My Club team, Collierville Lobos, will be competing in several tournaments this coming season and I would appreciate it if you could watch me play. Please let me know if you or any assistant can make any of the following events. I will be certain to pass along updated tournament schedules as the time gets closer.  {List Tournament Name, Location, Dates, Schedule if applicable}  {List Tournament Name, Location, Dates, Schedule if applicable}

I have also reviewed your team’s schedule and would love to come watch the game on {enter date} versus {enter competitor} and possibly meet you and the team and perhaps a tour of the campus. Would this be convenient for you?

I have enclosed my soccer resume for your review. Please let me know if you would like any additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your time!
