Fallen Angels – Final Project

Choose one of the following projects to complete. All projects are worth 50 points – rubrics will follow.

1) Create a graphic novel (comic strip) that illustrates at least five (5) major events of the novel. In your illustrations indicate mood through background. Indicate tone through dialogue and facial expressions of the characters. 2) Compile an anthology of either poems or song lyrics about war. Choose at least six (6) samples that cover various American wars (Revolutionary, Civil, WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq War.) For each poem or song, explain the historical context of the war, analyze the theme of the poem or song, give a short biography of the writer, explain the writer’s purpose for his creation, and analyze the figurative language used. Finally write an original poem or song. 3) Create a series of graphics (pie chart, bar graph, or line graph, etc) for the years 1961, 1967 and 1974 that explain military and civilian casualties (American, Viet Cong, North Vietnamese, South Vietnamese), military expenditures/budget of both sides of the war, and the racial and economic breakdown of the American soldiers. Write a one-page analysis of your findings. What do you infer from your charts?

4) Create a scrapbook for one of your favorite characters. In this scrapbook, you must include a bio poem for your character, three letters to someone in your character’s family in which you retell a event from the beginning, middle, and end of the novel, two items that belong to your character, three photos of the war, and a song or poem written by your character.

5.) Create a power point or movie of some aspect of the conflict. Choose a theme (returning vets, effects on Vietnamese after the war, the country after the war etc.) Create a presentation with visuals and data regarding the theme. 6. Create a four page newspaper on publisher that describes the events of the novel: Richie’s getting shot; deaths of soldiers; pictures from the era; death counts; stories of napalm; Agent Orange, maps of places indicated in the novel.

I understand that several days in class will be provided to do computer research, but I also understand that additional work and time outside of my scheduled class will be required to complete the project. I will adhere to all standards as described in the rubric for my project. Time in class will be evaluated for productivity (five points per day.) Lack of productivity will result in reduction in points. Continued lack of production will result in parent communication.
