Governor Brown Signs No Hunger for Heroes Act Senator Hueso achieves a win for California veterans

Sacramento, Calif. (September 11, 2013) – Senator Hueso successfully submits another law into California’s Chapters with Senate Bill 134, No Hunger for Heroes Act. SB 134 increases food security for California’s military families and veterans. In addition, it prevents counties from requiring mandatory participation in the CalFresh Employment and Training Program (E&T) in order to be eligible for food assistance.

“This law eases the path for low-income veterans to receive basic nutrition assistance,” said Senator Hueso. “To maximize support for our veterans, increase the success rates of unemployment and reduce hunger for families with veterans, it is critical that we provide adequate resources and appropriate referrals.”

SB 134 prevents counties from requiring mandatory participation in a CalFresh E&T program as a condition of receipt for federal food help. It also instructs counties to refer veterans to their veteran’s assistance programs.

In addition to receiving bipartisan support throughout the legislative process, this bill had no opposition. SB 134 is sponsored by the Hunger Advocacy Network, MAZON | A Jewish Response to Hunger, and the San Diego Hunger Coalition.

Senator Ben Hueso represents the 40th Senate District, which includes the cities of Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, Coronado a portion of the City of San Diego, Imperial County, and the southern part of Riverside.
