BOOK OF THE WEEK - 9.45am & 12.30am – Mon-Sat The Gaol Kelly Grovier's history of Newgate, London's most notorious prison, abridged in 5 parts by Libby Spurrier. 1: While London's theatres came and went, the gaol remained the capital's unofficial stage. Playing host to legendary outlaws and flamboyant highwaymen, it was inside Newgate that England's greatest dramas would unfold. Read by Jasper Britton.
BOOK AT BEDTIME – 10.45pm – Mon-Fri The Night of the Mi'raj Zoe Ferraris's gripping crime novel set in contemporary Saudi Arabia, abridged by Alison Joseph. 6: Nayir's murder investigation leads to an uncomfortable encounter at an American compound. With Anton Lesser, Roger Allam, Loo Brealey, Dominic Rowan. Directed by Abigail le Fleming. POETRY PLEASE – 11.30pm - Saturday Roger McGough introduces requests for the work of Alexander Pope. Renowned for his biting satire, other aspects of his personality are revealed in the narrative love poem Eloisa to Abelard. The readers are Christian Rodska and Noni Lewis CLASSIC SERIAL - 3.00pm – Sunday (repeated next Sat) The Portrait of a Lady Henry James's novel, dramatised in three episodes by Rachel Joyce. 1: Innocence. Young and beautiful, Isabel Archer thinks that she is in control of her fate. Little does she know, however, that others behind the scenes are pulling the strings. With Anna Maxwell Martin, Haydn Gwynne, Robert Bathurst, Gayle Hunnicutt. Directed by Tracey Neale. OPEN BOOK – 4.00pm – Sunday Mariella Frostrup presents the books magazine. POETRY PLEASE 4.30pm – Sunday Roger McGough presents a special programme, live from the Latitude Festival in Suffolk.
