Principal’s Summary:

The month of November seemed to pass very quickly. Teachers and students worked very hard during the first week of the month on the district’s second benchmark test. The tests took almost two weeks to fully complete. We will be using the data from these tests to monitor student progress and instructional planning for the upcoming months. Our master teacher, Amy Milchman, has begun “field testing” in specific classrooms this month. She is presenting lessons to students that focus on informational text and that include instructional strategies that help students with reading comprehension. The data that she collects from the field testing classrooms will be used in weekly cluster meetings with all teachers. The TAP Leadership Team continues to meet weekly and is focusing on the data from the “code” system. Code is the software system that we input our teacher evaluation scores into. We are able to generate reports that show us our teachers’ collective strengths and weaknesses according to the TAP Rubric. As a leadership team, we will be looking at how we can support our teachers next semester and help them to improve weaker areas on the Rubric by using the data from these reports to help guide our team’s planning for the content presented in cluster meetings.

Many parents and kindergarten students enjoyed the annual Kinder Feast for Thanksgiving this month. We had lots of eager parents join us for “Thanksgiving Lunch.” Students dressed in Pilgrim and Native American costumes and shared a delicious Thanksgiving Feast with their friends and families. This is an annual event we host each year. The administrators enjoyed the event as much as the students!

We completed our student council cookie dough fundraiser for the semester. Student Council collected just over $14,000 in cookie dough sales and all of the delicious dough was successfully delivered before Thanksgiving break. Student Council will collect a 40% profit from the sales and use the money for student activities throughout the remainder of the school year.

Karla Calzadias, our Student Council and NJHS President did an outstanding job presenting our student leader report at the recent Board of Education meeting on November 14th. Karla has been a student at Magma Ranch for the past five years and she represented our school with pride that evening.

Both of our soccer teams had a successful November with a combined record of 5-1-2. Each week they are getting better and better. The first round of the playoffs will start the first week of December. We are so proud of our student-athletes as they are able to keep up with their academics and represent our school in a positive light.

Our 1st to 6th graders will be able to burn off some calories gained during the break as we have 125 students participating in the 4th annual Magma Ranch youth basketball games. They will play for six nights and get a team T-shirt. None of this would be possible without the help of our 20 volunteers each night. The staff went above and beyond for our students. The first night of games will be on Monday, November 26th. Last, we ended the month with the annual Winter Dance for students. Student Council and junior high students decorated the cafeteria and hired a D.J. to rock the evening out with fun music and lots of good food. Our 5th grade team hosted a K-5 dance for the rest of the student body in the gym as a fundraiser for our 5th grade annual field trip to the YMCA Sky-Y Camp. The money will be used to offset the cost of the trip for all 5th grade students. Our goal is for all 5th graders to be able to attend this annual grade level trip.
