Miss. Barlow 425-831-4181 [email protected] Office: Girls locker room. WELCOME!

About this class: In this health class, we are discussing topics and situations to prepare you to live a healthy life. We cover anything from reading a nutrition label, to learning how to react to abusive situations. We will also have guest speakers such as Mr. D’Ambrosio discussion the district drug and alcohol policy. There is a lot to cover, so we have to stay on task. I have high expectations for this class, as we are talking about mature topics, and I believe you have the tools and help to do so--I am more than willing to help you succeed!

Objectives: This health class is designed to give you the skills and courage to make healthy choices in life. These healthy choices are based on Washington State Standards for health and fitness. 1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life: movement, physical fitness, and nutrition. 2. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy life: recognizes dimensions of health, recognizes stages of growth and development, reduces health risks, and lives safely. 3. The student analyzes and evaluates the impact of real-life influences on health. 4. The student effectively analyzes personal information to develop individualized health and fitness plans.

Assessments: The assessments listed below are projects or tests used to measure your ability to apply what was learned in class and what you already know, to life situations. These projects will require time spent at home. CBA- “Fitness Plan for Pat” Create a fitness plan based on situations, and the FITT principles. Celebrity research project- Students will pick someone famous and analyze the physical, psychological and social health effects that drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco have affected their lives. Family tree- Take family history and analyze hereditary health parameters. Magazine- Large project at the end of the quarter. A “portfolio” of work done in the quarter, as well as new projects compiled into one magazine or news cast.

Tools for success: Homework: Will usually be provided if the work was not complete in class that day, and should be written in your Raven Planner, provided to you by the school. Bathroom: One student will be allowed to leave the class for the restroom. They will sign out and back in. Time to leave is when the teacher has already given instructions. Communication to the teacher: Please feel free to reach me through email (located at the top of this document) at any time. Just make sure to give me enough time to respond with an answer. Since my office is in the girls locker room, if you need to get ahold of me, just call into the locker room for me to come out to the gym to chat, and I will be happy to. This is where I will be BEFORE and AFTER school. Supplies: 1. For this class, we will be doing a journal entry to get the class started. Please have a composition notebook by Wednesday, Sept 9, to be prepared for the quarter. This will stay in the classroom overnight, and not go home. 2. Please also have a tab, section, or folder for this class only. 3. Your brain. I want you coming in ready to learn, ask questions and participate.
