CE61A - The Organisation and Management of Construction

Objectives. This course will examine the various aspects of the development of management theory and thought as they relate to construction projects. The fundamental functions that managers have to perform as planners, organisers, controllers and leaders are examined. The history of management philosophy is traced from the traditionalists through the scientific management phase, classical organisation theory, the behavioural school, and the human relations approach to modern day Western and Eastern styles of management. Theories of motivation in the construction environment are examined, as are the roles of leadership and the problems of delegation of authority. The need for professional ethics and possible conflicts between ethics and business performance on construction projects are examined. Approaches to problem solving and decision making are examined and the role of initiative and creativity is highlighted. The management of data and information are examined, with emphasis given to the design of data handling systems and the role of computers in information management. The management of quality; TQM and ISO9000
