Secondary Teacher Education Program Admission Application

The College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The Department of Teaching and Learning encourages students to consider the field of Secondary Education and welcomes applications for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education program. Students who have questions about the process should make an appointment to meet with the College of Education Student Services Center at (702) 895-1537 or CEB 221.

CONDITIONS WHICH APPLICANTS MUST MEET TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION APPLICATION In order to apply to the Secondary Teacher Education Program, these preliminary conditions must be satisfied:

1. Admission to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas;

2. Satisfactory completion of all Secondary Education full-major requirements:

 EDU 201/202  Passing Praxis Core Exams or PPST scores prior to Nov 1, 2013  Completion of General Education courses (for 2010 catalog and newer only)

3. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 for all UNLV courses.

4. Teaching Field GPA of at least a 2.75 and completion of 9 teaching field credits

Meeting these conditions does not automatically guarantee admission to the Secondary Teacher Education Program

Personal interviews may be requested at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

Deadlines to apply: October 1st (for admission to the Spring semester) March 1st (for admission to the Fall semester)

Admissions decisions are made by Secondary Education faculty (not advisors). Their decision will be based on the review of your academic history, PPST/PRAXIS CORE score results, and personal statement essay, so it will be necessary to include the following in your application packet (incomplete applications will not be accepted):

___ An unofficial copy of your transcript(s) from all institutions attended OR a printout of your course history in MyUNLV (this option MUST include your entire academic history from all institutions); ___ A copy of your Praxis Core Exams or (PPST prior to Nov 1, 2013) test results; ___ Personal statement essay (see details below)

***Note: The above course and all pre-major requirements must be completed before being admitted to the program. Students CANNOT enroll in a practicum block until all requirements have been met (i.e. PPST, GPA, required coursework)

3. General Education Core: All university core requirements must be completed prior to being admitted (this applies to students on the 2010 or newer catalog only).

4. Personal Statement: On a separate piece of paper, please express why you would like to be part of the Secondary Teacher Education Program in your specific teaching field (Biology, Math, Social Studies,etc). Your responses should be clear and detailed and should be a minimum of one double-spaced page (no more than two).

If planning to enroll in a practicum the following semester, I must also complete an online Field Experience application (passing Praxis Core or PPST scores required to apply) on the Field Placement website. Deadline for a Fall Practicum is March 1; deadline for a Spring Practicum is October 1.
