Taylor Made News April 2016

Principal’s Message:

Thankfully it seems that weather has finally changed and matches the Spring season! April seems to be author month for our students. Yesterday author and poet Jeff Nathan visited our third grade classes and worked with our students and teachers on the writing process. I hope families enjoyed last night’s fun filled evening of Jeff’s entertainment, word games, songs, and book signing.

We celebrated another Breakfast of Champions in March! Our fourth grade champions, were Ryan Flaherty, Isabelle Chamberlin, and Molly Conger nominated by the teachers for demonstrating trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, effort, fairness, compassion, and citizenship. Congratulations to our Champions!

Page 1 Taylor Made News April 2016 Thank you to Elizabeth Kessock and Melanie Yates for coordinating an exciting Spring Fling! The tradition continued with an amazing community and filled with family fun.

Many families have plans for the vacation week ranging from exotic trips to staycations in Foxborough. During the school break there are still plenty of opportunities to have your children practice their reading, writing, and math skills. This coupled with your plans meets the goal of having your children think over the break! Please remember to have your child demonstrate their reading stamina and play math games over the break to keep their skills sharp. Please keep this information from William Nagy and Patricia Herman in mind. This also hold true for mathematics!

Kindergarten Leprechaun Traps

The kindergarteners did an amazing job creating Leprechaun Traps using the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) design process. They had to design a plan and think of a solution to the problem; catching the Leprechaun in hopes of getting his pot of gold. They drew their ideas on paper to come up with a trap design. Then with the help of their family members, students used critical

Page 6 Taylor Made News April 2016 thinking and problem solving skills to build a model of their design. Many students used gold coins, rainbows, and shamrocks to lure the leprechaun into their trap. The final step was to put their traps to the test. Each student explained and demonstrated how their trap worked before setting it strategically around the classroom. We thought for sure we would catch him this year with one of these great traps. On March 17th, we checked each trap but once again the Leprechaun was not fooled. He did leave a note, a mess and a lucky coin for the students. We will give it another try next year! We are proud of all the

kindergartener’s hard work and their creative ideas. It was a lot of fun! A big thank you to our families for their support in completing this project.

¡Hola amigos! Thank you to all families who attended and participated in our 3rd annual World Language and Culture Night at the Foxborough High School on April 11th. What a success! We are so lucky to be a part of such a generous and involved community; it was a perfect reflection of what the World Language Department is all about here in Foxborough. In Spanish class this month, students continue to work hard on the following concepts...

Grade 1: Students continue to practice the days of the week and months of the year. We practiced how to say our birthdays in Spanish! We are also learning about family members and pets.

Grade 2: We just finished our unit on weather and the four seasons. This month, students are focusing on La Ropa (clothing).

Grade 3: Students are working on La Comida (food). Grade 3 is finishing up their culminating project "Los Menus." Each student is creating their own restaurant menu to showcase all of the different types of food vocabulary we've learned.

Grade 4: Students continue to learn about Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries. Ask them to sing the countries song for you!! Grade 4 students are also working on La Comida (food) and will be focusing on food deriving from Spanish speaking countries (especially tropical and non-tropical fruits). As a grade level, we continue to read the chapter book Las Aventuras de Miguelito and I must admit that I am THOROUGHLY impressed with their listening comprehension! Way to go, Grade 4!!

Page 12 Taylor Made News April 2016 Thank you to all of the students who participated in the Poster Contest for our 3rd annual World Language and Culture Night! The posters brought about great conversation and admiration during the event and they all encompassed our theme, Languages Connect the World, so well! One winner will be chosen from the elementary schools, middle school, and high school on April 15th. No matter what, you are all winners in my eyes! I am so amazed at your incredible art work and dedication to this project! Way to go, Taylor School!! Sincerely, Señora Silva Missing from photo: Fiona Dunn & Cameron Lucas-Pelletier
