Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

Este insecto ha sido encontrado en diversas localidades de la X Región. Se entregan algunos antecedentes de su biología y de sus plantas hospederas. ABSTRACT The presence in Chile of the holoartic sawfly Ametastegia glabrata (Fallen) is reported. It is a polypha- gous insect, that feed on different cultivated plants and weeds. PSCHORN-WALCHER Abstract: Larval collections and rearings have been made of the European species of the sawfly genera Metallus, Monostegia, and Phymatocera. The biology of Metallus albipes, a leaf-miner specialized on raspberries, is described in some detail. M. pumilus has been reared mainly from dewberries (Rubus caesius), less often from rock bramble (R. saxatilis), but has rarely been found on blackberries (R. fruticosus agg.). M. lanceolatus, mining the leaves of wood avens (Geum urbanum), is also briefly dealt with. The larvae of these leaf-miners are described and a total of 11 species of parasitoids have been reared from them, including 3 highly specific Ichneumonid species of the genera Lathrolestes and Grypocentrus. Monostegia nigra, an entirely black sawfly species separated from M. abdominalis by TAEGER (1987), has been reared from Lysimachia punctata in gardens. In contrast to M. abdominalis, frequently reared also from L. vulgaris (yellow loosestrife), M. nigra lays several eggs dispersed over a leaf (not in an oblong cluster) and the head capsule of the larvae is uniformly yellowish (not with a dark stripe on the vertex). -

Empria japonica Heidemaa & Prous, sp. nov. is described from Japan. The lectotypes of Empria gussakovskii Dovnar-Zapolskij, 1929, E. konowi Dovnar-Za- polskij, 1929, Poecilosoma longicornis Thomson, 1871, P. mongolica Konow, 1895, and P. tridens Konow, 1896 are de- signated. Empria konowi Dovnar-Zapolskij, 1929 (syn. nov.) and E. gussakovskii Dovnar-Zapolskij, 1929 (syn. nov.) are synonymized with E. tridens (Konow, 1896), and Empria waldstaetterense Liston, 1980 (syn. nov.) with E. alector Ben- son, 1938. This article reports four complete sawfly mitogenomes of Cladiucha punctata, C. magnoliae, Megabeleses magnoliae, and M. liriodendrovorax for the first time. Oliver S. Flint, Jr. (1931-2019) An obituary of this outstanding naturalist and world renowned expert on caddisflies appears on pages 74-88 of this issue. 74 BANISTERIA NO. 52, 2019 Banisteria, Number 52, pages 74–88 later in the Bulletin of the Brooklyn Entomological © 2019 Virginia Natural History Society Society (Flint, 1956). It was the first of his many papers on caddisflies. Ollie pursued further study in the Obituary Department of Entomology and Limnology at Cornell University, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1960 under the Oliver S. Flint, Jr. direction of Clifford O. Berg (1912–1987), who studied (1931-2019) sciomyzid flies and snail-borne diseases, being the first to discover that fly larvae prey on snails (Brown et al., 2010). Ollie was a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellow at Cornell from 1957–1959. His 264- page dissertation, entitled “Taxonomy and biology of Nearctic limnephilid larvae (Trichoptera) with special reference to species in eastern United States” was published in 1960 in Entomologica Americana. Because of his expertise in the fields of entomology, botany, and geology at an early age, Ollie had been offered graduate fellowships in all three disciplines, but chose the former for his career. However, he maintained his interests in botany and geology throughout his lifetime, and became quite knowledgeable of tropical botany. In 1961, Ollie was hired as an Associate Curator of Entomology by the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. These new records also indicate that our collective knowledge of Pacific Northwest arthropod biodiversity and biogeography is underdeveloped, even for a relatively well known and species-poor group of insects. -
