The city is known as the "Sun City", enjoying bright and sunny weather all the year round and was known as the "Blue City" because of the blue colours that decorate many of the houses in the old city area. Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by RaoJodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan. The city was located on the strategic road linking Delhi to Gujarat. This enabled it to profit from a flourishing trade in opium, copper, silk, sandals, date palm and coffee. From 1540 – 1556 Afghans controlled most of north India exposing the local tradesmen to the wider world as local tradesmen made their mark across northern India with new styles of art and architecture. During British Rule, the Marwari merchants flourished and came to occupy a position of dominance in trade across India. The High Court of Rajasthan was established here in 1949. The handicrafts industry has, in recent years, eclipsed all the other industries in the city. The items manufactured include textiles, metal utensils, bicycles, ink, glass bangles, cutlery, carpets and marble products. Tourism is the second largest industry featuring Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaswant Thada, and the Ghanta Ghar, or Clock Tower. Being at the onshore of Thar desert, life has been influenced by ways of select nomadic tribes.
