An area youth bowler with several years of eligibility remain- ing recently considered joining an adult league because he had heard that his accumulated SMART (Scholarship Man- agement and Account Reporting for Tenpins) funds would be unusable were he to accept a college scholarship. As a top student, he believes such an offer likely would happen. 15 Years Ago  Lee Brosius, Dawn Fay, and Sharon Weber comprise the Hall of Fame’s “Class of 2003.”  Karla Pereira (614) and Chris Johnson (746) win the 600-700 Scratch Doubles event at AMF Dale City.

20 Years Ago  The Nation’s Capital Area Bowling Association (NCABA) board of directors votes to reinstitute a ranking system for the first time since the 1988-1989 season.  Bowl America Woodbridge bowlers composite the highest NCABA (182.940) and Washington, D.C. Area Women’s Bowling Association (152.514) averages.

25 Years Ago  Elvin Davidson, 13, rolls a 264 game—105 pins over average—at Fair Lanes Shady Grove.  Top seed Frank Gallo Jr. of Lanham, Md., defeats Ron Bauer of Sterling, Va., 198-167 to win the Nation’s Capital Masters Tournament at Fair Lanes University.  Ronald Davis, 12, of Fair Lanes Capital Plaza rolls 197-192-245/634 and totals 806 with handicap to win the Singles division in the Virginia State Junior Tournament at Bowl America Manassas.

30 Years Ago  Hall of Famer Larry O’Neill wins the Scratch Bash Shootout at Bowl America Burke.  A 792 series by Kenny Jones at Bowl America Manassas leads the association’s Gold Pin Awards listing.

35 Years Ago  Brenda James (616 series) and Arlene Savage (582) finish third in the WIBC Tournament Division I Doubles category.  Greg “The Doctor” Goetz is rendered speechless after receiving an ABC “11-in-a-row” award for his 290 game in the Virginia Masters league at Seminary Lanes.

40 Years Ago  Hall of Famer Frank Dunham Sr., 62, recognized as one of the top area bowlers of the 1950s who rolled the area’s first-ever perfect game, suffers a fatal heart attack while golfing in North Carolina.  Rosemary Verrelli (A Division / 606 series) and Rosa Simpson (B Division / 603) win titles at the WDCAWBA 600 Club Tournament at Fair Lanes University.

45 Years Ago  Karl Sjogren of Fairfax (A Division) and Dale Fox of Fort Meade (B Division) are divisional titlists at the 4th Annual Junior Invitational Singles Tournament.  During the MWBPA Invitational at Skor-Mor Lanes, Paul Anderson becomes the second bowler in ABC history to roll a perfect game using two pair of lanes.
