Our Sunday readings will focus more intently on things of the end times and our need to become servants of all so that we can enter into the a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The Church, and even our secular society, gives us some very important reminders of this call to live out our ever growing relationship with Jesus. Throughout the month of November there are special days for us to take time to reflect upon the journey so far, to rejuvenate and prepare to move forward. Let us look at a few of these: All Saints Day (October 31-November1): The month begins with the celebration of Hallowmas, All Hallows’ Day, the Solemnity of All Saints, preceded by the last day of October, All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween). A day and its Vigil in which we as Church remember all those holy people (saints) both known saints (such as the seven newest saints canonized by the Pope) and more importantly the great multitude (Rev. 7:9) of the unknown saints who now are in heav- en praising God and praying for us. This day may also remind us to celebrate the oneness we share with them as God’s holy people, the Communion of Saints (Baptismal Promises/Apostle’s Creed). In fact in the early church, during the time of persecutions, Christians would often carry an identification letter stating they belong to the communion of saints. All Souls Day (November 2): Our belief in life after death informs us that those who have transitioned into the next life are now either in the eternal presence of God (heaven); the eternal absence of God (hell); or awaiting entering eternally into God’s presence (purgatory). All Souls Day (The Day of the Dead) gives us an opportunity to pray for all of the faithful departed and to usher in the month of prayer for all of those who have died. We can remember our departed loved ones and all who have touched our lives. Election Day (November 6): This may seem like a very secular day but it should remind us that our relationship with Jesus infuses us with an interdependence for others which obliges us to ‘love one another’ (Jn. 13:34) by shaping the moral character of society through bringing truth to civic life. It is thus a moral obligation to participate as Faithful Citizens, at all times raising our voices, informed by Catholic social teachings and moral principles, on matters that effect the common good and exercising the right to vote, for those who can. Thanksgiving Day (November 22): Although this may seem like a day to celebrate our abundance it might be helpful to remember that the first modern national Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, because of the need of the nation to remember a sense of unity and the abundance fostered by that unity. It is a day in which we as a people can ‘re-member’, come together in unity celebrating the presence of God in the abundance of our lives but more importantly when we seem focused on the scarcity, in the good times and more importantly in the bad. A day to recognize the presence of God in our world through all of the people he has brought into our lives. May the month of November give us an opportunity not only be pray for the faithful departed but also to pray for all people, living and dead. May God bless you all, Dcn.
