UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Female Subjectivity, Film Form, and Weimar Aesthetics: The Noir Films of Robert Siodmak by Kathleen Natasha Wackett A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BA HONOURS IN FILM STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION, MEDIA, AND FILM CALGARY, ALBERTA APRIL, 2017 © Kathleen Natasha Wackett 2017 Abstract This thesis concerns the way complex female perspectives are realized through the 1940s noir films of director Robert Siodmak, a factor that has been largely overseen in existing literature on his work. My thesis analyzes the presentation of female characters in Phantom Lady, The Spiral Staircase, and The Killers, reading them as a re-articulation of the Weimar New Woman through the vernacular of Hollywood cinema. These films provide a representation of female subjectivity that is intrinsically connected to film as a medium, as they deploy specific cinematic techniques and artistic influences to communicate a female viewpoint. I argue Siodmak’s iterations of German Expressionist aesthetics gives way to a feminized reading of this style, communicating the inner, subjective experience of a female character in a visual manner. ii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without my supervisor Dr. Lee Carruthers, whose boundless guidance and enthusiasm is not only the reason I love film noir but why I am in film studies in the first place. ULMER, THE RACE MOVIES AND THE NEW NEGRO AGENDA Acknowledgement: The unusual personality of Edgar G. Ulmer has been brought to my attention by my colleague and friend from Cologne University Bernd Her- zogenrath, who has also provided me with the dvd with the footage of this rare film. I. The following article examines Edgar G. Ulmer’s race film Moon over Harlem. It discusses this rare film in the context of Ulmer’s career but, more importantly, in the context of the phenomenon of race movies, which, in their day, provided their viewers with a much needed alternative to Hollywood’s stock representa- tions of African Americans. It also takes into account the actual situation of the Black urban population during the Great Depression and argues that the reform agenda expressed by means of its main heroes coincides with certain ideals of progressivism and the New Deal reforms and that its principal characters embody the ideal of Alain Locke’s New Negro. II. Known as one of the “king of the B’s”, Edgar G. Ulmer (1904–1972) earned his reputation as a filmmaker who could work with extremely tight budgets and still turn out interesting work with a unique personal style. Like Roger Corman after him, Ulmer could shoot movies under a week and get excellent production values for the miniscule amounts of money spent on them. Ulmer was never universally known or appreciated, yet the personal vision of his films – and the resourceful- ness with which he battled the budgetary constraints – have become legendary among filmmakers and film-buffs alike. -

The Birth of Haptic Cinema An Interactive Qualifying Project Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Panhavuth Lau Jordan Stoessel Date: May 21, 2020 Advisor: Brian Moriarty IMGD Professor of Practice Abstract This project examines the history of The Tingler (1959), the first motion picture to incorporate haptic (tactile) sensations. It surveys the career of its director, William Castle, a legendary Hollywood huckster famous for his use of gimmicks to attract audiences to his low- budget horror films. Our particular focus is Percepto!, the simple but effective gimmick created for The Tingler to deliver physical “shocks” to viewers. The operation, deployment and promotion of Percepto! are explored in detail, based on recently-discovered documents provided to exhibitors by Columbia Pictures, the film’s distributor.
