History of Keetmanshoop Municipality of Keetmanshoop

The Nama tribe !Kharo-Oan led by Captain Hendrik Tseib settled at a place they called #Nu#goaes or “Swartmodder” referring to the black march found, that indicated the presence of a spring in the area. The first white settler Guilliam Visagie, arrived here in 1784. When in February 1850 the !Kharo-Oan clan split from the Red Nation the main sub-tribe of the Nama people settled here permanently.

Shortly after this, in 1860, the Rhenish Missionary, Dr. Carl Hugo Hahn sought finances to establish a church and mission station to Christianize the local Nama tribe. A German business man from the town of Barmen, Johan Keetman donated the funds and the settlement was renamed Keetman’s Hope in recognition of his generosity and also the hope that the project would succeed.

After the 1884 German occupation of Namibia, Keetmanshoop was proclaimed a town on 14 April 1866 and granted municipality status on 01 November 1909. The old German post and telegraphic office was built in 1909 with an accommodation wing for staff. The building was proclaimed a National Monument on 02 February 1987. It is situated on the corner of Hampie Plichta Avenue and now serves as the Keetmanshoop Tourist Information Office.

Following the wash away of the original church in the great flood of 28 October 1890, the Rhenish Mission Church was rebuilt on higher ground and was consecrated on 08 May 1895. It is the oldest standing building in Keetmanshoop and now serves as a museum. The church was proclaimed a National Monument on 17 June 1978.

The town is situated near two guiver tree forests, one of them being a national monument and a major tourist attraction of Keetmanshoop.
