  • Address by Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh, to the Sixty-Fourth World Health Assembly
SIXTY-FOURTH WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY A64/DIV/5 Agenda item 4 20 May 2011 Address by Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh, to the Sixty-fourth World Health Assembly Geneva, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Mr President, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Mr Bill Gates, excellencies, ladies and gentlemen. Assalamu Alaikum and good morning to you all. I am honoured to speak before you today on critical health issues. Let me at first warmly congratulate you, Mr President, on your election to this prestigious position of this important forum. I also congratulate Dr Margaret Chan for her outstanding leadership of the World Health Organization. I congratulate most warmly, Mr Bill Gates, a renowned philanthropist, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the magnanimous contribution to global common good, especially in public health. Mr President, my father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also the Father of the Nation, firmly believed in freedom, human rights and overall welfare of people. Under his leadership we liberated the country. Sadly, when he was busy in realizing his dream of “Sonar Bangla” – a country of people having dignified lives – he and 18 immediate members of our family were brutally murdered by a few miscreants on 15 August 1975. As the elder of his two daughters who survived due to being abroad at the time, I took up my father’s dream as a challenge to fulfil. I am now on that personal mission. I have a vision for Bangladesh. We dream of a middle-income country in the next decade where the rule of law and social justice will prevail over poverty, hunger, inequality, impunity and exclusion.

  • Dynamics of Bangladeshi Politics: Business Interest, Conflict and Challenges in Governance
International Journal of Social Science And Human Research ISSN(print): 2644-0679, ISSN(online): 2644-0695 Volume 04 Issue 03 March 2021 DOI: 10.47191/ijsshr/v4-i3-10, Impact factor-5.586 Page No : 289-305 Dynamics of Bangladeshi Politics: Business Interest, Conflict and Challenges in Governance Kamrul Hasan1, Mujahidul Islam2 1Assistant Professor, Department of Government and Politics, Jahangirnagar University 2Assistant Director at IDEA ABSTRACT: Bangladesh is performing better in the growth of GDP and experiencing remarkable progress in development indicators such as poverty alleviation, maternal mortality, infant mortality and enrollment in primary education. However, despite the restoration parliamentary democracy in 1990s, political governance is decaying in the country. The present study, taking dynamics of Bangladeshi politics into consideration, seeks to explore the interplay between business and politics and its impact on governance with supplementary evidence from public transportation sector as case example. Among others, the principal question of the paper is how business interest creates crisis in governance? It reveals that business elites are involved in all decision-making process in the government institutions and they make pro-business policy undermining people’s interest that leads to a confrontation between government institution and business elites which ultimately generates crisis in governance in almost all other section of the nation like transportation sector. KEYWORDS: Bangladesh Politics, Abuse of Power, Business, Conflict, Governance 1. INTRODUCTION Presently, a euphoria is haunting Bangladesh – the euphoria of development and growth. The country is enjoying a continual and sustained growth in GDP from 5.045% in 2009 to 7.284% in 2017 and expected to reach 8.0% in 2019.

Shaon Akter, Lecturer, Dept. of English, KYAU, Sirajgonj, Bangladesh) ABSTRACT Education is the backbone of a nation. The total development of a country largely depends on the development of the education sector. Our government has initiated to implement the Vision 2021 where it has been estimated that this country will acquire self-sufficiency in all the sectors. It is assumed that Bangladesh will overcome the poverty level and stand as a self reliant country in the world by this vision 2021. The economic growth of Bangladesh will cover up a satisfactory level to remove poverty and this nation will build up a new identity as a middle-income nation. The per-capita income will be higher and the citizens will lead to a higher standard of living after the implementation of Vision 2021. But no planning will come into effort without ensuring education for all. So the study is to remind the Government that they need to keep in mind the inevitability of education before going forth for the success of Visio 2021.
