    Catherine Meades, Cameo Family History www.cameofamilyhisory.com ANNEX 1 – QUAKERISM IN BENFIELDSIDE Benfieldside is an area in County Durham to the north west of Consett covering Shotley Bridge, Bridgehill and Blackhill. It is not a village in its own right. Benfieldside has a long association with the Quakers – one of their earliest Meeting Houses was there. The Quaker movement – more formally known as the Society of Friends – began in ca. 1648 in England under the leadership of George Fox. As the Hoppers were Quakers by the 1650s they were very early converts to the movement and may well have met George Fox himself as he visited the area during this early period. This was a very small Quaker community and the same small selection of family names – Hopper, Brantingham, Mason, March and others – appear repeatedly in the records. Unfortunately, the early Quaker community dwindled and in 1789 the functions of the Benfieldside Meeting were transferred to Newcastle. By 1813 it had closed altogether1. Note: Iveston is not geographically part of Benfieldside but is close enough to be encompassed within the Benfieldside meeting. “Sufferings” Like many non-conformist groups, the Quakers were subject to discrimination and persecution during much of their early history. Unlike other groups they refused to hide their beliefs and openly, but peacefully, defied the law. As a result, they were subject to a range of penalties which were recorded in books of “Sufferings”. These sufferings ranged from seizure of goods in payment of tithes to imprisonment. The Benfieldside Monthly Meeting records 1653-18202 include details of some of the Sufferings although generally they were recorded in a separate book.

    Shotley Bridge A guide to three HERITAGE walks around TRAIL Shotley Bridge pointing out buildings and places of interest and linking them with the people who shaped its past. Each walk is circular, starting at the Heritage display board at “The Triangle” in the centre of the village. Walks A and C cover different parts of the village and will take you about 45 and 30 minutes respectively. Walk B goes upstream along the River Derwent, is partly rural in character and will take about one hour. The riverside footpath may be muddy in wet weather. Walk A involves more up-and-downhill walking than B and C. Shotley Bridge stands by the River Derwent on the border of Durham and Northumberland. First mentioned in 1356, it is suggested that its name comes from the Anglo Saxon “shot” meaning “a place” and the Old English “leah” meaning “a clearing”. It owes much of its history to the German swordmakers who settled here in 1687, followed by industries like the paper and flour mills. The opening of the Spa brought rapid expansion, as did the construction of the Low Road to Newcastle in 1843 and the railway station in 1867. The centre of Shotley Bridge was designated a Conservation Area in May 1975 and contains many listed buildings. 2 Snows Green WALK A and Benfieldside Cross from the Heritage board to the Crown and Crossed Swords and on uphill to Snows Green Road. The Town Hall [1] a tall stone building with Gothic features, was erected in 1860. The main hall was used for concerts and dances and it became Lloyd’s bank in 1872.
