A staple in the region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. A program-record 305 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2008- 09 season, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams last season, the program has expanded to a record 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams established in the last two years alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three Valiant squads (men’s basketball, baseball and men’s tennis) earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships in 2008-09 and both the men’s and women’s hockey teams spent much of the year with national rankings. Sixteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference tournaments last year, including four conference championship game appearances. In all, Manhattanville teams posted an impressive .548 winning percentage (184-151-6) last season, with two Valiants teams also setting new program records for wins in a single season. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2008-09 as well. Men’s hockey forward Chris Trafford and women’s hockey center Holly Nonis became the 15th and 16th Valiants to earn All-American honors following the season, while the pair were two of four players to be named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned three conference Rookie of the Year awards and 31 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have went on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- rounded student-athlete. Hodgson continued to rebuild the tradition of the Valiant program in 2009, helping the team to a 6-9 overall record and just missing a spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament. He produced one of the best wins in program history toward the end of the year, when the Valiants handed MAC frontrunner FDU-Florham its first conference loss of the year in a 4-3 double-overtime thriller on the road.

The Valiants finished 8-8 in Hodgson’s first season at the helm, the most wins by a first-year coach in program history. The team advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Metro/ South Championship, marking only the program’s second postseason appearance since the 1992 campaign.

Hodgson came to the Valiants after spending 2007 as the Defensive and Recruiting Coordinator at Scranton, a program that was in its first season under a full-time head coach. With Hodgson’s guidance, the Royals enjoyed their winningest season in five years, doubling their win total from 2006 and dropping their goals against average from 11.8 to 9.1, while advancing to the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Prior to his time at Scranton, Hodgson spent two seasons as the top Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Williams in the powerhouse New England Small College Athletic Conference. With the Ephs, Hodgson oversaw the offensive unit, boosting the team’s goals per game average from 6.7 in 2004 to 10.1 in 2006, a year that was highlighted by a regular season win over eventual National Semi-Finalist Wesleyan.

Hodgson began his coaching career in the Middle Atlantic Conference at Susquehanna from 2001-2004, serving as the Crusaders’ offensive coordinator. Susquehanna posted the program’s highest-ever win total during Hodgson’s stay and produced the team’s first All-MAC player and the 2003 MAC Rookie of the Year. The Hodgson Herald Year Record Conference Postseason On the field, Hodgson shined at Ramapo High School in the mid-1990s 2008 8-8 1-6 (7th) ECAC Metro/South Semifinals and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Gill-Gibbs Senior All-Star 2009 6-9 5-5 (t-6th) -- Game in 1996. The Wyckoff, New Jersey native then went on to star for four Career 14-17 (.451) 6-11 (.352) seasons at Drew, leading the Rangers to a 42-20 record and three consecutive Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. Assistant Coach Tom Albano First Season • Springfield ’09 Tom Albano, a four-year men’s lacrosse letterwinner at Division III Springfield College, enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Valiant men’s lacrosse program in 2009-10.

Albano will serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator as well as assisting with the Valiant goalkeepers and defensive unit.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to help this program continue its recent success,” Albano said. “I am looking forward to assisting Coach Hodgson in raising the profile of the Manhattanville men’s lacrosse team on both the regional and national level.”

Albano comes to Manhattanville with a bevy of collegiate lacrosse experience at Springfield, earning four varsity letters and serving as the team’s starting netminder as a junior and senior. In 51 career games (39 starts), Albano posted a career 7.19 goals against average, a .601 save percentage and a 25-14 record, while his 400 career saves rank sixth in school history at Springfield.

He had one of the best seasons in program history as a senior captain in 2009, posting a school-record 7.04 goals against average and stopping 61.7 percent of shots he faced. Albano earned ECAC New England Region Goaltender of the Year honors and an All-ECAC first-team selection, while he was also recognized as a first-team All-Pilgrim Lacrosse League honoree and was selected to play in the 2009 NEILA/Turfer East-West Senior All-Star game. The netminder led the team to the second round of NCAA Tournament last year, where he made 22 saves against eventual NCAA titlist Cortland State.

In four seasons, Albano helped Springfield to three NCAA Tournament appearances and three Pilgrim League championships.

A native of Ridgefield, N.J., Albano currently resides in Purchase, N.Y. 2 2010 Manhattanville Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide Coaching Staff Offensive Coordinator Drew Ginsberg Third Season • Springfield ’07 Drew Ginsberg returns to the Manhattanville Lacrosse coaching staff in 2010 for his third season as an assistant coach, and will work primarily as the team’s offensive coordinator this year. Ginsberg joined the Valiant staff in August 2007, joining Todd Hodgson’s initial coaching staff at Manhattanville.

Ginsberg is responsible for assisting in all aspects of the Valiant program, including fundraising, alumni affairs, academic monitoring, game and practice preparation, and assisting in individual training sessions.

A graduate of Division III power Springfield College, Ginsberg served as team captain of the Pride during his senior year. He was a three-time Pilgrim League All-Academic selection as well.

In addition to his duties working with the Valiant offense, he worked closely with goalie Andrew Predun, helping Predun earn first-team All-Conference honors.

Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball teams. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength, training, locker room and office facilities and is the operational home of all Valiant sports. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, the coaching staff can address the team before and after games, and the rooms are a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker room facilities inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities. The offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within Ken- nedy Gym, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators. Kennedy Gymnasium is also host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. Strength & Conditioning Focused on the development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Department of Athletics views strength and conditioning as one of the most important developmental tools. The facilities inside Kennedy Gymnasium are a testament to that philosophy. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville College opened a new Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population, thus making Healthworks the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Healthworks is supervised by Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Corey Crane. Crane, along with his assistant strength and conditioning coach, is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 21 Valiant varsity sports. Athletic Training The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside Kennedy Gymnasium and are the place where all Valiant student-athletes come to receive com- prehensive health care from any of Manhattanville’s three fully-certified, full-time athletic trainers. The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. Scott McIver, a veteran of nearly 20 years in sports medicine, is Manhattanville’s Head Athletic Trainer. McIver worked for the Valiants from 2000-02 following a 12-year stint as Associate Athletic Trainer at , and came back to the school for a second stint beginning in 2006. JR Barkamian joined the staff in August 2008 as Assistant Athletic Trainer after spending time at Division I . The department also employs a full-time Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer to help coordinate the school’s 21 sports. 22 2010 Manhattanville Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide Manhattanville College Manhattanville College, located just north of in thriving Westchester County, has been educating young people on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over 150 years. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004. Participants in the My Soldier program, who are not limited to Manhattanville students, send letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops. A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider has been wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
