It is known from only three specimens collected in the Seychelles on Mahé Island at the end of the 19th century, probably in an inland highland marsh. The species is currently classified by the IUCN Red List as Extinct, though one or a few specimens could conceivably still persist. DIST R I B UTION . – Seychelles. Distribution restricted to Mahé Island, now probably extinct. SYNONYMY . – Sternothaerus nigricans seychellensis Siebenrock 1906, Pelusios subniger seychellen- sis, Sternothaerus castaneus seychellensis, Pelusios castaneus seychellensis, Pelusios seychellensis. STATUS . – IUCN 2007 Red List: Extinct (EX) (assessed 2003); CITES: Not Listed. Taxonomy. —Siebenrock (1906) described this taxon as of Siebenrock himself (1916), the species was placed in the Sternothaerus nigricans seychellensis, the trinomial express- synonymy of Sternothaerus nigricans (Donndorf) (= Pelusios ing his belief that it was very close to the East African forms subniger [Lacépède] sensu lato). -
The Neogene Freshwater Crabs of Europe
Joannea Geol. Paläont. 9: 45-46 (2007) The Neogene Freshwater Crabs of Europe Sebastian KLAUS & Martin GROSS Freshwater crabs represent one of the most diverse groups of brachyuran crustaceans. Although several studies on recent material use palaeontological data to reconstruct their phylogeny and palaeobiogeography (e. g., DANIELS et al. 2006, KLAUS et al. 2006), the freshwater crab’s record remains poorly known. Most of their fossil relatives come from Neogene sediments of the North-Alpine Foreland Basin and the rim of the Central Paratethys. We recorded all taxonomic data of the fossil freshwater crabs of the European Neogene and recognize seven species that we assign to the genus Potamon: Potamon quenstedti (Engelswies, Langenenslingen; Karpatian), Potamon speciosus (Öhningen; Upper Badenian to Lower Sarmatian), Potamon hungaricum (Ždana; Lower Sarmat- ian), Potamon proavitum (Andritz/Graz, St. Stefan/Gratkorn; Upper Sarmatian), Pota- mon n. sp. (Höwenegg; Pannonian), Potamon castellinense (Castellina marittima; Up- per Miocene), Potamon antiquum (Dunaalmás, Süttö, Mogyorós, Bajót; Upper Plio cene/Lower Quaternary). Today, two families of freshwater crabs occur in the Mediterranean region: the Pota midae and the African Potamonautidae in the Nile valley. Several of the European fossil freshwater crabs were formerly assigned to the Potamonautidae (e. g., BOTT 1955). The only morphological character that could support this is the typical straight and sharp postfrontal crest of potamonautids. In contrast, all known fossil freshwater crabs of Europe show the potamid character state with a postfrontal crest forming two distinct lobes. This argues for a closer relationship with the Potamidae. Therefore we contradict former assumptions on a closer relationship with African or Southeast Asian freshwater crabs and argue for the fossil crabs to be part of the stem-group of the mo- dern European potamids. -

S c h u b a r t a n d F a b i a n H e r d e r 12.1 Introduction Some of the world’s most spectacular species radiations or species fl ocks are found in so-called ‘ancient lakes’. Th ese are long-lived lakes that have existed for 100 000 years (Gorthner et al. 1994 , but see also Albrecht and Wilke 2008 ) or more (e.g. Lake Tanganyika and Lake Baikal). Ancient lakes are justifi ably regarded as hotspots of diversifi cation (e.g. Martens 1997 , Rossiter and Kawanabe 2000 ), even if not all ancient lake species fl ocks match the diversity of the super-fl ock of East African cichlids (e.g. Kornfi eld and Smith 2000 , Kocher 2004 ). Studies on the evo- lution of ancient lake organisms have continuously resulted in important insights into general patterns of speciation and radiation (e.g. Streelman and Danley 2003 ) ever since the seminal review of Brooks ( 1950 ). During the last decade, smaller ancient lakes (c. <1 000 km 2 ), which are generally less well investigated, have attracted increasing attention. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. 17 SUPERFAMILY GRAPSOIDEA The crabs belonging to the Grapsoidea include a lot of ubiquitous species collected in the mangrove and/or along the coastline. As a result, most of the species listed here under the ‘Coastal Rock-rubble’ biotope of table 2b could be reasonably listed also with marine species. This is particularly true for the Grapsidae: Grapsus, Pachygrapsus, Pseudograpsus, and Thalassograpsus. FAMILY GECARCINIDAE Cardisoma carnifex (Herbst, 1796). The following new combinations are also presented: Phycosoma spundana (Roberts, 1978) n. comb., Argyrodella pusillus (Saaristo, 1978) n. comb., Rhomphaea recurvatus (Saaristo, 1978) n. comb., Rhomphaea barycephalus (Roberts, 1983) n. comb., Bardala labarda (Roberts, 1982) n. comb., Moneta coercervus (Roberts, 1978) n. comb., Nanume naneum (Roberts, 1983) n. comb., Parasteatoda mundula (L. Die Arten gehören zwei Familien an, den Parathelphusidae und den Sundathelphusidae. Zu den ersteren gehören die Gattungen Spiralothelphusa Bott mit hydrodroma Herbst, Oziotelphusa Müller mit senex Fabricius und mineriyaensis n. subsp. und Ceylonthelphusa Bott mit rugosa Kingsley, sorror Zehntner und injlatissima n. subsp., zu den letzteren Perbrinckici Bott mit enodis Kingsley. Die Verbreitung der Gattungen und Arten und ihre morphologischen Merkmale werden dargestellt. Dem besonderen Entgegenkommen von Herrn Prof. Per Brinck vom Zoologischen Institut der Universität Lund verdanke ich die Möglichkeit, die Ausbeute an Fluß- Krabben der Schwedischen Ceylon-Expedition 1962 zu bearbeiten und damit eine zusammenfassende Darstellung zu geben. Das Material stammte aus fast hundert Fundorten und besteht aus einigen hundert Exemplaren der verschiedensten Alter- stadien. Durch die Liebenswürdigkeit der folgenden Museen und der zuständigen Herrn konnte ich die Originalexemplare einer Anzahl von Arten heranziehen, um die Svnonomie zu klären.
