This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. While commercial success is not always consistent from one decade to the next it is clear that the medium has been and will continue to be a cultural staple in the society of the United States. I have selected this type of popular culture for analysis precisely because of the longevity of the medium and the recent commercial success of film and television adaptations of comic book material. In this project I apply a Critical lens to selected comic book materials and apply Critical theories related to race, class, and gender in order to understand how the materials function as vehicles for ideological messages. For the project I selected five Marvel comic book characters and examined materials featuring those characters in the form of comic books, film, and television adaptations. The selected characters are Steve Rogers/Captain America, Luke Cage, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jean Grey, and Raven Darkholme/Mystique. Methodologically I interrogated the selected texts through the application of visual and narrative rhetorical criticism.

Four categories of action/adventure comics were defined and the five best-selling titles in each category were identified. Six issues of each title were analyzed for textual and visual stereotyping. Women continue to be in the minority. As a result, women are less likely to be main characters, the rescuer or the person in charge. Under the Direction of Michael Galchinsky ABSTRACT The genre of comics has had a tumultuous career throughout the twentieth century: it has careened from wildly popular to being perceived as the source of society‘s ills. Despite having been relegated to the lowest rung of the artistic ladder for the better part of the twentieth century, comics has been gaining in quality and respectability over the last couple of decades. My introductory chapter provides a broad, basic introduction to the genre of comics––its historical development, its different forms, and a survey of comics criticism over the last thirty years. In chapter two I clarify the nature of comics by comparing it to literature, film, and pictorial art, thereby highlighting its hybrid nature. It has elements in common with all of these, and yet it is a distinct genre.

    Unmasking Marvel's Superheroes: A Genre Analysis of the Marvel Cinematic Universe By Christian Bredvig Abstract There is a common perception that superheroes have been the rulers of Hollywood since the turn of the 21st century. A perception that partially based on the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With the long-lasting prevalence of superheroes in general and the MCU in partic- ular, it is not uncommon for industry analysists and scholars to wonder why this genre has survived in the limelight for so long. This thesis attempts to solve that mystery, as it questions the conventional wisdom that superheroes have been dominating Hollywood blockbusters for the past two decades. Given that genres are not unchanging entities and since movies do not need to declare themselves as a specific genre, it can be difficult to create clear dividing lines between genres. However, if the ambition is to predict the trend of superhero movies, it must first be established exactly what this trend entails. This thesis delves into how the MCU actually consists of movies pertaining to widely different genres and how this might be why the MCU has managed to persist for as long as it has. This is shown by applying Rick Altman's semantic/syntactic approach to genre, in order to show how the movies in MCU's phase 1 adhere to different genre conventions. This is followed by an analysis into Liam Burke's attempt to categorize contemporary Hollywood blockbusters as "comic book movies"; a genre label Burke himself has defined. Burke attempts to include the MCU as part of the comic book movie genre, but this is critiqued for its poor applicability and lack of explanatory power.
