  • Press Release for the Lord of the Rings Sketchbook Published By
Press Release The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook by Alan Lee • About the Book • About the Author ALAN LEE ON U.S. TOUR FOR THE LORD OF THE RINGS SKETCHBOOK About the Book In The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook, world-renowned artist Alan Lee reveals his approach to depicting J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginary world, on both the page and the screen. An internationally acclaimed illustrator of Tolkien's books, Lee was also one of the conceptual designers on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, for which he earned an Academy Award®. To celebrate the publication of the book in October, Houghton Mifflin, Tolkien's official U. S. publisher for over sixty years, will bring Lee to the United States for a national tour. The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook presents more than one hundred-fifty of Lee's celebrated illustrations to show how his imagery for the illustrated Lord of the Rings and the films progressed from concept to finished art. In addition, the book features twenty full-color plates and numerous examples of the conceptual art produced for Peter Jackson's film adaptation. As Ian McKellen (who plays Gandalf in the films) notes in his thoughtful foreword to the book, it was Lee's illustrations of Tolkien's books — as well as artist John Howe's — that originally inspired Jackson's vision of Middle-earth. The sketchbook "feels and looks like other artists' records of great journeys to foreign lands," McKellen writes. "But in Alan Lee's case, his sketches of Middle-earth and its inhabitants preceded the travel, and the country he helped uncover in New Zealand was partly of his own making." Accompanying the artwork in the book is fascinating commentary by Lee, including personal anecdotes and explanations of his methods, his intent, and his role on a project as vast as the film trilogy.

[ARTISTICALLY DECLINED PRESS] McCreesh, Hosho A DEEP AND GORGEOUS THIRST: DRUNK POEMS BY HOSHO MCCREESH Oregon: Artistically Declined Press, 2013. One of 20 copies signed by the poet, Hosho McCreesh, who describes himself as a drunken poet. From reviews: “In the footsteps of Charles Bukowski comes Hosho McCreesh’s magnum opus of drunk poetry. Mammoth in size and scope, A Deep & Gorgeous Thirst is unlike any of McCreesh’s previous collections. Because writing and drinking go hand in hand, it may seem an impossible challenge for a poet to offer new perspective of this well-worn, symbiotic relationship. But McCreesh does, and in this brilliant collection he uses subject matter that might feel old and tired in the hands of a less capable poet and turns out exciting and irresistible poems. A perfect elegy to the illusions and delusions of alcohol.” This copy is from the edition of 20 described by the press as “The DrunkSkull Flask Clamshell.” It includes a handbound hardback book housed in a custom-made clamshell box. Hidden within the clamshell is the coup de grace - an 8 ounce black flask, engraved with the book’s DrunkSkull logo, which is housed in a wood insert, along with some pieces of promotional ephemera that include two letterpress broadsides of unpublished drunk poems signed by McCreesh, a ticket also signed, and a third unpublished broadside hand written and painted by the poet. Hidden under the flask are a patch, a sticker, and a removable tattoo - all featuring the DrunkSkull logo.
