Abstract Background: Current tools for Co-phylogenetic analyses are not able to cope with the continuous accumulation of phylogenetic data. The sophisticated statistical test for host-parasite co-phylogenetic analyses implemented in Parafit does not allow it to handle large datasets in reasonable times. The Parafit and DistPCoA programs are the by far most compute-intensive components of the Parafit analysis pipeline. -

The paper presents a conceptual study of a new transportation hub – the Transferium. Based on the unsuitable accessibility of the existing railway station, the location of a new railway station is proposed. The paper addresses the transport and transit demands of the new railway station in the context of current and future traffic. Furthermore, the urban integration of the new station and the surrounding urban space is proposed, and last but not least, the construction and technical context is presented. Schau'n und Genießen ohne Hast freu'n sich der Verführung Gunst. Höhepunkt der Gebirgs-Weihnacht ist die Bergmannsparade; stattlich in Uniform und Tracht sind Knappschafts-Kameraden. Hüllt sich der Abend in Schweigen, glitzert Schnee im Lichterbaum, dann tanzen Flocken im Reigen, und das Land liegt wie im Traum. Da erschallt ein Jubelgesang hinauf zur Sternenpracht. The largest deposits of coal are located in the basins of the foothills of the Ore Mountains, at Sokolov, Chomutov, Most and Teplice. These areas were developed exclusively on the basis of coal mining at the expense of other economic activities, the natural environment, the existing built environment, social structures and public health. Everything had to make way for coal mining as coal was considered the “life blood of industry”. Mining executives, mining projection auxiliary operations, and especially Communist party functionaries were rewarded for ever increasing the quantities of coal mined and the excavation and relocation of as much overburden as possible. When I began in 1979 as an officer of government of the regional Regional National Committee (KNV) for North Bohemia in Ústí nad Labem, the craze for coal was in full swing, as villages, one after another, were swallowed up. -

The countryside in the Czech-German-Polish Triangle at the begin- ning of the 1990s was seriously damaged by a high concentration of mining and industry sites (dumps, mine shafts, extensive erosion from surface mining) as well as suffering from one of the highest emission densities in Europe. The con- sequences for nature were se-vere (forest damages, water contamination etc.). In view of these problems, cross-border development concepts were drawn up, helping to signifi cantly improve the environ-mental situation. The IOER is cur- rently evaluating the development of the environ-mental situation from 1990 to 2006, looking at such issues as landscape and nature pro-tection and the effects of the cross-border collaboration. Some results are presented in this article. Life in this German-Polish-Czech border region was dominated by the activities of mining and heavy industry, with local people affl icted by smog, contaminated water, dying forests and other damage to the countryside. -
