Challenging ESPN: How Fox Sports Can Play in ESPN's Arena
Challenging ESPN: How Fox Sports can play in ESPN’s Arena Kristopher M. Gundersen May 1, 2014 Professor Richard Linowes – Kogod School of Business University Honors Spring 2014 Gundersen 1 Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship ESPN has with the sports broadcasting industry. The study focuses on future prospects for the industry in relation to ESPN and its most prominent rival Fox Sports. It introduces significant players in the market aside from ESPN and Fox Sports and goes on to analyze the current industry conditions in the United States and abroad. To explore the future conditions for the market, the main method used was a SWOT analysis juxtaposing ESPN and Fox Sports. Ultimately, the study found that ESPN is primed to maintain its monopoly on the market for many years to come but Fox Sports is positioned well to compete with the industry behemoth down the road. In order to position itself alongside ESPN as a sports broadcasting power, Fox Sports needs to adjust its time horizon, improve its bids for broadcast rights, focus on the personalities of its shows, and partner with current popular athletes. Additionally, because Fox Sports has such a strong regional persona and presence outside of sports, it should leverage the relationship it has with those viewers to power its national network. Gundersen 2 Introduction The world of sports is a fast-paced and exciting one that attracts fanatics from all over. They are attracted to specific sports as a whole, teams within a sport, and traditions that go along with each sport. -
Nurturing Media Vitality in Quebec's English-Speaking Minority
Brief to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage Nurturing Media Vitality in Quebec’s English-speaking Minority Communities Presented by the Quebec Community Groups Network April 12, 2016 Introduction The Quebec Community Groups Network, or QCGN, is a not-for-profit representative organization. We serve as a centre of evidence-based expertise and collective action. QCGN is focused on strategic issues affecting the development and vitality of Canada’s English linguistic minority communities, to which we collectively refer as the English-speaking community of Quebec. Our 48 members are also not-for-profit community groups. Most provide direct services to community members. Some work regionally, providing broad-based services. Others work across Quebec in specific sectors such as health, and arts and culture. Our members include the Quebec Community Newspaper Association (QCNA). English-speaking Quebec is Canada’s largest official language minority community. A little more than 1 million Quebecers specify English as their first official spoken language. Although 84 per cent of our community lives within the Montreal Census Metropolitan Area, more than 210,000 community members live in other Quebec regions. Media Landscape English-speaking Quebecers have consistently signalled that access to information in their own language is both a need and a priority (CHSSN-CROP survey, various years). This may seem a bit of a contradiction in a world awash in English language information through CNN, Time magazine and Hollywood movies galore. The important nuance is that English- speaking Quebecers need information in their own language about their own local and regional communities, something that is increasingly hard to access on a consistent basis in a context of the francization of daily life in Quebec and the demise of traditional community media. -

Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2005-30
Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2005-30 Ottawa, 31 January 2005 Encore Avenue Ltd. British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories Application 2003-1664-7 Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2004-35 28 May 2004 Encore Avenue and Comic Strip – Licence amendment The Commission denies the application by Encore Avenue Ltd. to amend the broadcasting licence for its pay television programming undertaking in order to permit its two channels, one known as Encore Avenue and the other as Comic Strip, to be provided as an unencrypted service that can be distributed on discretionary analog tiers of broadcasting distribution undertakings. The application 1. The Commission received an application by Encore Avenue Ltd. (formerly MovieMax! Ltd.) for an amendment to the broadcasting licence for its English-language pay television programming undertaking that broadcasts on two channels, one known as Encore Avenue and the other as Comic Strip (hereafter referred to as Encore). The applicant requested authorization to permit Encore’s channels to be provided as an unencrypted service that can be distributed on discretionary analog tiers of broadcasting distribution undertakings (BDUs). Background 2. Encore is authorized to serve western Canada on an encrypted discretionary basis. It provides programming that is packaged by theme for delivery by BDUs to their subscribers on multiplexed program channels. Encore’s channels consist primarily of feature films copyrighted at least five years prior to the year of their exhibition on the service. Encore Avenue Ltd., the licensee company, is indirectly owned by Corus Entertainment Inc. (Corus). 3. The Commission originally licensed the Encore undertaking (originally known as MovieMax!) as well as another pay television programming undertaking (now known as MoviePix), which was authorized to provide a similar movie service in eastern Canada, in Approval of New Pay Television Services: “The Classic Channel” and “MOVIEMAX”, Decision CRTC 94-278, 6 June 1994.
