GENUINE LEADERS GET OUT AND SPEAK WITH THEIR PEOPLE ON A REGULAR BASIS I recently attended a meeting at the London o ces of a company with whom I’ve worked for several years. 24 | Working to meet the island’s needs

Being an independent bank has enabled Conister Bank to tailor its crisis contingency plans to meet the Isle of Man’s specific needs.

ouglas Grant, managing director of Conister Bank, said the business was able to come up with a bespoke plan to D deal with the threat created by the spread of Covid-19, so both the bank and its customers were best placed to face up to the challenges ahead ‘Most major corporations will have already drawn up or will be in the process of drawing up an action plan to deal with the developing situation with regard to Covid-19,’ he said. ‘But the nature of big business can mean that it takes a while for all the details to be addressed, especially at a local level. ‘That’s where an independent business can demonstrate the value of its close community links and local knowledge.’ Conister Bank started work on a contingency plan as soon as the potential seriousness of Covid-19 became apparent. It has plans in place not just to continue its own operation e ectively but to support local businesses in what looks set to be a huge economic shock across the world, albeit hopefully temporary. Douglas said this was good business sense. ‘Keeping the economy strong – and helping small businesses to withstand the storm will assist with that – is important for all businesses.’ It was a similar situation when the prospect of a no-deal Brexit was looming large, said Douglas. Conister Bank drew up a tailor-made plan to deal with its potential impact on the Isle of Man and to support the bank’s clients. PROPERTY MARKET By Peter Sharkey The search for investment property has felt considerably more intense than at any time in the recent past during the fi rst quarter of 2020. Anecdotal evidence it may be, but two recent incidents prove the point. ast week, I spotted a house, which, though it appeared to require extensive attention, could eventually become a handsome property Lso attempted to make an appointment to view; it had been on the F O R market three days. As I write (it’s Thursday afternoon), the agent I telephoned earlier today to arrange a viewing of a decent-sized house tomorrow or Saturday has just returned my call to say that the earliest she can book me in is next Tuesday. All other viewing slots are taken. There are various factors driving demand from buyers, not all of whom are prospective landlords. The most obvious is historically low interest rates, which impacts on two groups. The benefi ciaries of low rates are borrowers; it’s currently possible to secure a two-year, fi xed rate mortgage at 1.21%; fi ve year fi xed rate deals are on o er at 1.46%. Any longer-term property investor will tell you that when it comes to buying the ideal unit, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before happening upon a prince. Although, as noted above, your correspondent has su ered a couple of unexpected rejections recently, I have also visited a series of cold, empty houses, some marketed enthusiastically by the agent conducting the viewing, others where the agent has stood by, perhaps a little embarrassed by the condition of the property he’s attempting to sell.
